I've just managed to resurrect a dead computer and now I'm rediscovering old photos and I thought I would share.

This series is from my favorite of all lost ski areas called Mittersill. It is actually the second Mittersill with the first and far classier version located in Austria. The poor but land owning Baron Hubert von Pants converted his home Schloss Mittersill into one of the premier winter destinations for celebrities, eurotrash and rich american women looking to marry a title. The late Sunny von Bulow met her first husband at Mittersill I on a skiing trip. During WWII Schloss Mittersill was appropriated by a high ranking nazi official to become forcing the baron to leave Germany for the states.

Mittersill II was built in Franconia, NH as a joint venture between the baron and Sig Buchmeyer. Buchmeyer was a famous skier and alleged wikipedia husband of my childhood neighbor Kate. Mittersill was built adjacent to a still operating state owned ski area. As interest in skiing grew so did the resort, attracting the attention of celebrities, deposed royalty and other self important people. The baron eventually married an Avon heiress and spent the rest of his life jetting to resorts far nicer than the one he owned. The resort closed the ski area around 1980.

The state is in the last stage of a land swap that would trade parts of Lake Tarleton state park for the land necessary to reopen Mittersill.

1.
The still operating Mittersill "resort" community in Franconia, NH. One of the first timeshare resorts in the United States. Not something to be proud of. A tower for the second t-bar is on the left. The ski trails are "closed" but unofficially included in the price of a ski ticket at nearby Cannon.

Looking down the first t-bar line.

3.
The base of the area's chairlift.
