Drains, Sewers, Spelunking, how do you go about it?
< on 1/12/2009 8:49 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

So, drains, sewers, etc. The guy who travels with me has been wanting to do this since neither of us have. I found this:

But I think it's just the drain off a nearby lake, and doesn't go too far. I know the tunnel must be fairly sturdy, since it runs under what used to be train tracks.

However, we were walking by the river in town, and came across a raised manhole cover. Since it has a grips, steps, ladder, (whatever you want to call it) in there, we thought it might be promising. But what are some things to keep in mind for doing this? I'm mostly worried about air quality, to be honest.

Stepirons. (don't know how to pronounce it though, if it's step - irons or stepirons like you pronounce shenanigans)

You know, I'd never even considered that it might be anything other than step-irons

Looks exactly like the ones here that go under the train tracks. Two of mine have wooden floors though...let us know what ya find! If it's like mine it's about 4 feet tall, which will be pretty exhausting to go in.

If you feel airflow constantly, you're doing good. Make sure you aren't getting weirdly dizzy, headachey, or light-headed, and that's the most common air-quality trouble you'll have.

I've got to do something like that once, even if I prefer buildings. I just hate roaches. The idea of being in a tunnel with those... evil things crawling all around me, I don't know if I want to do it. This manhole cover didn't have a bad smell, and I didn't hear water in it, so I'm hoping it'll be better.

Wait until you encounter a rat. There's a few going in the drains across from my mothers house, always scared me away from going in.

It's all foreign to me.

Pretty much any drainage system manhole you encounter will have step-irons or a ladder so seeing them isn't exactly an indicator of something worthwhile. Judging by the photo, it doesn't look as though it's anything very big. Unless you enjoy crawling through 24" pipes, then I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Rats don't bother me. Roaches are just soulless spawns of Satan and the malevolent creatures behind Nazism, nightmares, and The View.

Probably all it is. I don't think my city has any real underground tunnels.

yea, based on the leaves, that tunnel isn't big...

but don't abandon hope! if you really want to, check it out. But I highly suggest that you continue with your attempt to drain, but just find a larger tunnel to do so.

Draining is plenty fun.

Go to you city's web site (yep, they have one) and poke around for GIS data or a storm drain inventory. Start at the down-streamiest ones and see what's what. Particularly compare a map of drain lines with a map of surface water. Where it doesn't match...

Google Maps can help unless you have heavy tree cover like we do here.

EDIT:
Question about your stony drain. Is this lake made by a dam? At a nearby lake I found a small tunnel leading through the dam, under the lake, and into a tower that sticks about 10' above the surface of the lake. Aside from super-sketch ladders it gives access to a sweet artificial island 50' overhead. My tunnel looked a lot the same as yours. Is it a low-flow tunnel going off into a hillside with a lake on the other side of the hill? Ok, I'm rambling now, sorry.

Thanks for the help! ^_^

And yeah, it is by a [small] dam. Here... let me show you...

We were standing around here when we found it.

Ive been to a few storm drains or just underground tunnels. Usually they just lead into other tunnels or you reach a point where you cant fit anymore. The Gates Of Hell was good for that. There were a few tunnels i didnt go down because of flooding tho so who knows where those went. Found a few tunnels in Toms River also which just went under parking lots and came out on the other side in the woods.

It is. It's also on it's own island with the walkway smashed to hell to keep people from getting in. As you can see, the damn keeps water moving fast around it. It'll be a pain to get inside, but I'll eventually do it.
