| | | There are cranes outside the building, they are doing repairs on it.....I don't know what they are doing to it, but they are doing something.

Power Plant's a problem. It's pretty soldered shut. We were right next to it when we went on the boat, and we'd made a drive-by after the fort adventure (so VERY recently).
But with THAT many entrances, there HAS to be a way in someplace. Good luck looking into that.

The power plant is a breeze, there is literally no doors beyond the fence, you can walk straight in.. But be careful the inside is head to toe metal scaffolding. It makes for fun climbing, cool pictures, but it is also old and rusted and several times the scaffolding gave way... There is awesome old turbines or something in there, the size of buildings... Its awesome..

| | | Hey guys wuz been up? Thanks for all the compliments and support from everybody. Me and my partner really appreciate it, thats one of the reasons why we do this... We love the architecture, the thrill, the smell, the curiosity, the pictures, and the all around awe inspiring experience. But truthfully we love just being able to share with people what is behind those walls that they drive in front of on their way to work everyday, what is in the darkest crevices of the most infamous city in the world... That is why we love ueing... We literally have at least 100 new posts of locations throughout New Orleans and surrounding areas. We are also throwing around the idea of running a live web cast with pretty decent cameras that we have just acquired. It would be a backpack camera system that would allow people to get a first hand view of some of the coolest places in N.O. If this is something that people would be interested in please provide some feedback it would be greatly appreciated. We also have been traveling to some pretty exotic places to attempt to check out some sites. We just returned from Amsterdam, had a blast and got to check out some unbelievable spots throughout Amstel. Let me stress had a BLAST!!! But the older architecture out there is amazing.. So we plan on posting some of those sites in the near future. We have been and plan on taking some more trips up north to visit some insane asylums, and also West to check out some silos... I know there is alot of questions about the safety of entering Charity, or whether or not there is dogs, cops, gangs, drug dealers, homeless people, radiation, mold, asbestos, and a million other things... The best piece of advice that I can give is that it is truly the most amazing place tat I have explored... Take it for what it is worth, yes it is dangerous, yes they train dogs, yes their is cops, yes their is gangs, yes their is drug dealers, yes their are homeless folk in there, yes there is some rooms that present unsafe levels of radiation and asbestos... But if you got the desire like I do, you will not let those roadblocks stop you, Right??? Charity is HUGE if you be careful and watch every step and listen for people and sounds you can move through the belly of the beast pretty easily... Just be careful and pay attention to your surroundings. Remember that you are in New Orleans, and respect that, and you should be safe. Again please guys let us know what yall think about the idea to live broadcast some explorations... Peace..

I for one support the idea of live broadcast from inside any location! Not only would it be entertaining for those who can not enter those places, but it is always important to record that part of your history. This is a lifestyle, obviously, and just like families film their children playing tee-ball, we should record our adventures, our children of the city. I hope you really get that going, and I for one would love to be involved if you hit up the city, as I am sure anyone near New Orleans would like to be. Hit me up some time, I would love to join your adventures! EDIT: Now that I think about it, live might not be the best idea, but I do support filming the locations! Have you been recently? There were definitely doors when I went, welded shut. At least on any doors on the 3 sides visible from the street.

| | | I can't imagine the power plant being completely closed. I went back in November, and like someone else said, once you get passed the gate there are literally a million ways in. And Jxl, your exploration was the only reason I joined UER. It's still the best post I've read on here nearly a year later. Keep it up. [last edit 4/23/2010 10:11 PM by Liquorhead - edited 1 times]

And Liquorhead thanks for the props, I love to hear that new people are joining this group... Ya know what was the building that got me into UER? It was the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells Tx.lol... I don't know much about asbestos, but I think any radiation hazards are probably low, as long as you aren't disassembling any of the interesting medical equipment. Of course, a review of the tragedy in Brazil in 1987 would be in order:
http://en.wikipedi...%C3%A2nia_accident Goiânia’s Instituto Goiano de Radioterapia (IGR)[3], located 1 km northwest of Praça Cívica, was abandoned in 1985. A caesium-137 based teletherapy unit was left behind. Over the following years, many homeless, squatters and scavengers entered the building. Eventually, on 13 September 1987, two men — Roberto dos Santos Alves and Wagner Mota Pereira — came across the radioactive teletherapy head and took it with them in a wheelbarrow to dos Santos Alves's house about 0.6 km north of the clinic. There they partly dismantled the equipment, taking the billiard ball-sized cesium capsule out of the protective rotating head. The gamma radiation emitted by the capsule's iridium window made the men nauseous after a couple of days, but they assumed it was due to something they ate.[1] The exposure eventually caused localized burns to their bodies and one later had to have an arm amputated.
|
It gets worse from there -- someone breaks open the capsule and the village kids play with the pretty blue powder. 4 dead, 250 treated for varying levels of contamination. But the machine containing the radioactivity didn't cause any trouble until someone decided to put some effort into taking it apart. Unless the scrappers have really been busy (a possibility), I think the radioactivity is probably no worse than usual. Unless you see pretty glowing powder on the floor, in which case, run like hell. Then kick off your shoes and throw them away.
