Louisiana Hospital A.K.A. The City Zoo

This place speaks for it's self.  This was the biggest and most amazing place we have ever had the luck of being in.  This hospital is famous and also infamous throughout the peoples minds of Louisiana.  It was once a bustling hospital filled with thousands of people, now it is silent and dead.  Left pretty much untouched besides the absolute necessary repairs to keep this place from being a toxic site.  It was incredibly hard to get in and took a couple of weeks of planning but our hard work paid off.  Once inside we headed straight for the basement to see the famous tunnels underneath the hospital connecting it with the other hospitals in the area.  These tunnels were used to move thousands of dead bodies during this places hayday, and also as a direct route for the hospitals to connect with each other with out having to fight the traffic above ground.  The basement system was huge to say the least.  I could not believe that under seal level there was such a extensive basement system.  But there was, and it was incredible.  We found what was left of the morgue, it looks like most of the post-Katrina work was done in the morgue.  All of the morgue's freezers were removed (rumor has it after Katrina this place had bodies floating down there) probably to control disease and other things I guess!  But still the morgue was huge and desolate.  Right by the morgue there was also a old school ampitheater style learning center for observation of surgeries or to teach up and coming doctors procedures on dead people. It was amazing to find this place so deep under the hospital. If you look real close at one of the pictures down there you can see the table still under the water(my buddy almost fell on that table, trying to walk around it on the wall). This place looked like something out of a movie. As we made our way through the emergency room, which stretched for what seemed like city blocks, we made our way to the insane ward, infectious disease ward, jail ward, addiction ward, physical rehabilitation ward, and multiple other mind blowing places.  The hospital police section had a corner of the room which was filled with knifes and other contraband which was probably seized from visitors. One of the coolest places in there was the hyperbaric chambers.  They had two traditional looking smaller ones, but they also had a much bigger one.  It was blue and the size of a normal bedroom.  It was big enough for a large group of people to enter and also had a hospital bed in it with big leather chairs.  It was equipped with televisions and believe it or not the water worked and I believe the machine was still operational.  It looked brand new, which struck me as very odd.  As we rose higher in this building the traditional hospital floors began to disappear and now there was like four or five floors of doctor dorms and lawyer offices.  What topped this place off figuratively and literally on the top floor was a full court basketball gym.  Before this place shut it's doors I came here multiple times as a child, and I never knew of there being a basketball court twenty floors in the sky.  It amazed me, it must of been really cool to play ball that high in the sky.  The view from the roof was amazing and it was a good place to chill and regain our energy.  We basically went in there at dawn and came out at dusk, it was tiresome but it was well worth it.  The fate of this place is still unknown and it is not determined yet if they are going to tear it down or renovate it, but if I had to guess they will probably tear down this beautiful building and build some sort of condos or shopping mall or something.lol.  Hope ya enjoy. Peace!!!

Nice but have you considered using the DB for your entire set instead of posting them all on the forum?

WOW!! Look at all the expensive equipment just sitting, rotting away when it could be used.

The beds with restraints was pretty creepy. Glad your friends didn't find you in them.. A la "House on Haunted Hill" Bwah, ha ha ha ha ha....

Pretty good set of pix tho, I would have liked a larger view.

I applaud you. I had yet to see photos from inside this place post-Katrina.

Currently the city is planning on tearing down a couple hundred historic homes in lower Mid-City to build a new hospital instead of utilizing this building (or the Lindy Boggs building). I don't really see anything happening with The Zoo anytime soon.

i had the pleasure of touring this place a couple days ago and you are absolutely correct, breath taking. I'm curious though as to where the hyperbaric chambers were located... we searched nearly every floor rather extensively but never came across them. The basement was flooded with a foot of water so we didn't spend to much time down there (had to skip the morgue) so its possible that if they were down there we missed them. Anyways let me know if you can. Oh and we found this in radiology

is this next to those really rundown supposed to be abandoned projects that people still live in like they are supposed to be there, in the downtown area?

man I love NOLA.

is that huge abandoned power plant still there? that place is one of the coolest places ive ever explored, the roof alone on it would keep you busy for a few hours.

The blades and knives were in the hospital security room labeled confiscated contraband. Just a warning to all future visits this place is DANGEROUS. When we got there there was mass loads of people stealing shit loads of drugs from the pharmacy rooms and there was evidence of people cooing mass loads of drugs in there, in one room there was a whole hall way of burners set up, with rifle rounds laying around, just saying if ya ran into the wrong person in those long dark hallways, it might be trouble, I def. would not go by my self, not trying to deter anyone just please be careful.. I've always heard it called Charity Hospital. Back in 2002 I broke my collarbone. Being a poor college student with no insurance,I ended up there. I sat in the ER for 10 hours watching prisoners from Orleans Parish Prison cut in front of me with no visible ailments. There was a girl sitting next to me the whole time who was bleeding profusely. After I finally got my x-rays I overheard two cleaning ladies talk about encountering ghosts on the higher floors. I've always wanted to go explore it but figured it would be very difficult and dangerous to get inside given the neighborhood it's in. Awesome pics!

Wow. That's a Goiânia accident waiting to happen:

The Goiânia accident was an incident of radioactive contamination in central Brazil that killed several people and injured many others. On 13 September 1987, an old radiation source was scavenged from an abandoned hospital in Goiânia, the capital of the central Brazilian state of Goiás. It was subsequently handled by several people and caused serious radioactive contamination, resulting in a number of deaths. TIME magazine has identified the accident as one of the world's "worst nuclear disasters"
