| | | Will be in Germany for 10 weeks < on 12/24/2008 12:38 AM >
| | | This coming summer two of my school mates and I will be in Germany for 10 weeks to study, but will have a lot of extra time. We have done a ton of exploring in the Texas, California, and Washington D.C. areas, but I have only been on site in one place in Germany. We will be staying in Bamberg, but would be quite willing to take trains anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions of new sites that didn't make it to the database? Or want to do a meetup? TIA

| | | For some low-key exploring, check out the town of Baden-Baden. There is a semi-abandoned castle in the hills above the town. A third of the building has been converted to a really overpriced restaurant and hotel, but the vast majority of the castle is easily accessible. It's a fun hike up the mountain, too. The building was built in the 1400s, and while all the wooden components (2nd+ story, stairs, floors, etc) are gone, someone went and put in concrete staircases so every part of the castle can be walked to. No rock-climbing skills needed. The modifications are really tasteful, though, and won't detract your enjoyment at all. It's not hard-core exploration, but the views are killer. See if you can find the old washroom and what must have been the grand fireplace. I've got quite a few higher quality pictures here: http://caseyc.net/...many07/?g2_page=13

| | | I kayaked a day in Bamberg once, and that is a proper old little town. Must have lot's of places to explore, with all those medieval houses and stuff. although it was quite touristy and that is never a good sign.
And since you will be studying: learn that sentence 'Unbefugten betreten verboten'
that means you are on the right track That's an actual picture of a sign in Bamberg, believe it or not. Both pictures are from the trip report on that paddle trip. Funny how white water kayaking and UE can overlap EDIT: oh, and in the million to one chance that you want to go paddle there... don't do it, they rebuild the wave and it is a dead-trap now. Just to be sure that I don't send you to a watery grave on a UE forum, while all kayaking sites warn about the danger... [last edit 12/30/2008 12:27 AM by Calhovin - edited 1 times]
