Windows and wood

Well this is my first try at editing any pictures.
(1)

I was trying to use GIMP to get rid of the brightness in the upper right hand corner but I couldn't do it without the whole thing getting to dark so I just went with what i thought looked pretty good. Any tips on how to darken that area without changing the whole picture? If I get a tripod maybe a HDR might work?

(2)

I'm pretty happy with this one so I'm curious to what other people think about it. Do you think an HDR would look good here?

(3)

I was just playin around and i thought this one looked kinda cool.

I like #2 in that you were able to control the glare very well. And it's a good balance between light and dark in the shot.

My only advice is to compose the shot better by including all of the window frame in the shot. If you've noticed the upper right is cropped. Otherwise great job.

I'd have to agree with that. Overall, I think you could also do a little USM and a little other local contrast adjustments to get what you really want. Also, if you're into the GIMP, I'd take a look at the plugins. They have several that might be of use, such as the Highlights & Shadows one. You also seem to have an interest in HDR, there is a lot of software out there for generating HDRs and also simulating the Tone Mapping used to create the LDRs from compressed HDR data. Definitely look into the software, and even try some test images out there (you should be able to download some test images w/ three exposures to work with) and see if you can get some nice HDR results. Then go out and bracket your own w/ a tripod. Above all, keep learning, it looks like your eye is pretty good, now you just need to use the tools that will help and get to know them better.

Oh, and #3, ditch the Thresholded image, occasionally you'll find a nice high contrast scene that works in B&W, but not too much works in binary imaging unless you're looking to do scientific data analysis.

Thanks. In number two i had to rest the camera on a railing that was there so it was kinda close to the window. I really need to get a tripod. Any suggestions on where to get one? BTW black and white looks much better than last picture.

Here's what I use:
Manfrotto Modo

I like it, and its good for a light camera, but it can be a little too light for heavier cameras. What do you shoot w/?

You can't go wrong with B&H Photo http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

They have a lot of selections that fits different budget ranges.
