| | | Here's an interesting disconnect I've noticed on Google Maps... As they've gotten more and more places captured with "Streetview", there are some interesting places you can virtually "drive through" now. Most of the major highways, and many minor ones, are documented via the streetview tool, making for some decent virtual reconning of some remote sites. Anyway, I decided to see what the condition of a certain condemned neighborhood in El Paso looked like these days. I shot there back in January of this year, and I knew that shortly afterward, the entire neighborhood was demolished. For reference, here are the shots I took:
So when I went to Google maps, just as I expected, it now shows this low-rent, two-street little hispanic neighborhood completely leveled, basically: But I was in for a bit of a surprise when I went to the Streetview; the little neighborhood is still there...albeit already abandoned. But there's a twist... Here's a link to a streetview starting point near the corner of Ledo & I-10: http://maps.google...2.3380741164494445 At this streetview starting point, notice how there's no house or tree on the corner in the picture. Now click the arrow just under the "Ledo Rd" label; that'll move you slightly down Ledo Rd. Notice how the house magically appears, complete with the tree from my last picture above in front if it! This happens all over this neighborhood; I would have thought that whoever canvassed this neighborhood for Google would have done so once and that'd be it, but evidently there are several image sets of it, overlapping in some areas. Anyway, I just thought this was interesting, and thought I'd share it with the south region folks. Very odd to virtually cruise this now non-existent neighborhood and see it as it was...sort of.
