After getting a late start trying to meet up with Jimbo Jones, and then another member of our group getting called in to work we were a bit stalled on our scouting day. So we visited a few places significant in train history, and got to see a few neat things. I also got to try some new techniques for post processing after some good advice from argonian.

0 Apparently this was a light maintenance building for trains. It used to have windows all down the sides, as well as a roof. The crane was interesting, but I didn't climb it.

1 I'm not exactly sure how this was used, and I forgot to ask Jimbo about it, but it made for an interesting subject.

2 We ended the day by hanging here and smoking cigars waiting for the trains to go by, I'm glad there was a lull at one point because I wanted to get a shot without any trains in it. Next time though, I'll be sure to get some trains in the shot. Also, this was shot around 21:00, for about 20 minutes.

I'm not sure about the correct English name, but it looks like one of those "gas distributors" or "hose dividers" we used while working in a shipyard. That one is fixed, though, and the ones we had were portable (albeit heavy) and looked like pigs (and were of course called such). Anyway, I guess that one was for pressurized air (we had colour-coded ones for oxygen and acetylene, too) for pneumatic tools. The tank helps with the pressure differences between the smaller hoses connected to it.

All information and details given in good faith but not guaranteed!

Ah, I had a feeling it was something like that or for fluids of sorts. Thanks for the info

All I did was tell you to use your raw files. I don't know what your post processing methods are. You should tell.

OK with the first one the sky looks very unnatural, especially on the left side. It is distracting. It is also a bit off putting to have the blackish on one side and the bluish on the right.

The last one looks washed out. I just fiddled with the levels a bit so that you could see the wires, etc. that were kind of hidden by the brightness.

Overall, I think the colours are much better. Keep fiddling and get photoshop.

Que pasa, baby?

saturation/contrast is still too high in these for my liking. 2 works the best but i still think the contrast of it should be turned down a bit.

i like argonian's tweeks to your 3rd shot, i like her level adjustments.

i think the last one you should up the demi moore slider a bit however.

Ok. i'm trying to give you some critic _I_ think could make your photos look better.

pic 1 (look at the image i posted)

1. In this picture you have photoshopped the depth of field to be shorter than it really is, right? Just above the number one i you can clearly see there is some bad photoshopping. You can definitely see a line under the pipe where there is some of the original sharp background. So next time you photoshop use enough time to get it done right.

2. Another problem with the artificial depth of field. Since places 2 and 3 are approximately equally far away form the camera they should have the same depth of field. Either blur everything in the same depth or leave it sharp. this way the picture looks more natural. i can understand that you probably wanted to blur the stone and the bricks from the foreground and leave the nice texture on the concreate above the pipe.

I really love the tight crop in this picture and the concreate looks really good. The colors are awsome!

Overall i think the original is a great picture but the postprocessing is not working in this one.

pic 0

I can't really get anything out of pic 0. there is nothing to cath my attention. there is nothing wrong with the picture itself, its just empty.

Pic 2 is very good all it needs is bit of adjusting (like in the version made by argonian) to really make it stand out.

Hope this helps. Waiting to see more of your pics. (maybe new versions of of 1 and 2?)

That was a B&O railroad erecting shop for assembling locomotives. It burned down in the 1960s, I'm pretty surprised any of it is still there. It was the oldest railroad manufac. complex in the US. I think the rest of the remaining buildings are a museum now.

Yeah, in pic #0 if I turned around I would have been facing the museum and the tracks to the right in that pic are the old main line. I caught a pic of the old train going by, but I didn't like the composition.

If working in raw, I usually do the color balance first. Then find a decent EV level to get some detail in both shadows and highlights, and I try to balance the exposure with the curves. Then I step into the GIMP and I use the shadows and highlights tool to compress the dynamic range to fit the gamma of the display a little better. Then I do any touching up, then usually apply a USM that boosts the local contrast if I think it will help, and finally apply a USM for sharpening. Sometimes I avoid the local contrast a little, and sometimes I use a tone-mapping tool which applies a similar effect as tone-mapping an HDR. Then resize, and border.

I agree, I wanted to de-saturate the entire sky, but missed the blue, the clouds were also no on my side

Thanks maybe I'll shell out some cash for it, I wish they had a Linux version though...

Thanks for your critique I understand what you mean about the artificial depth of field, although there was something I was going for by leaving certain areas in focus. This website kinda explains what I was going for, but I wasn't trying to do exactly that method.

0. I can't place exactly why, but the photo seems too open to me. Feels like the focus is on the ruins, but I see more sky. Not sure how to change that, either a simple crop or perhaps shooting off to one side.

1. I'd like to see it at vertical composition. I feel like the shot is too centered, turning it vertical would allow for the focus point to stay centered, but give more of that amazing concrete texture. Also I would play around with ways to avoid photoshoping DOF.

2. My favorite of the set. I love the stark white, but I again feel maybe a vertical or a crop. It feels too open.

Just a few thoughts.
