Depending on the situation and the strength of the hobo, I'll usually use one of the following techniques:

Forceball: B, F, LP
Shadow Kick: B, F, LK
NutPunch: LP+BL
Fatality: F, F, F, HP

I just give them a pair of tickets to the gun show, and they usually scamper away.

But really, in all seriousness, carrying something like that around with you in an abandonment is just asking for trouble. Depending on your local laws, getting caught with that while trespassing could compound your charges considerably, and almost certainly in some way.

What I tend to do is think of objects I'm bringing exploring with me like this:

-What's the probability of me needing this object?
-Factoring in the above, how useful is this object really?
-If I am caught with this, what is the maximum potential for how much trouble I could get into?

If the reward outweighs the risk in your mind... then that's on you. If however, you feel the opposite... ask yourself what, if any alternatives are available that may be almost as useful but are less likely to get you in trouble. If you can't decide, just leave it, or you might end up regretting it later.

And like everybody else has been saying... You'll catch more flies with honey.. Be polite and always reserve violent measures for the very last. Having a weapon in hand will only serves to escalate the situation (unless your hands themselves are weapons, like mine, but of course not many of us can say that).

Good luck and safe exploring!

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was a joke. Then I read further and realized two things: one, that it sadly wasn't a joke, and I also wasn't mistakenly in the newbie forum; and two, that I just found the name for my band's next side project.

In all seriousness though, since the thread is, indeed, serious bizness, here's a serious answer: when I think I'm going to need hobo defense I go exploring with Whale, and everything just sort of takes care of itself.

yep.

You, my friend, are a fucking idiot. Not only will using this on a hobo make YOU an assaultant, on a run-in with the fuzz, you'll have a lot harder way to explain "i wuz juz taking pixures" with a device which can floor even the heaviest donut-dunker. A 4- or 6-cell Maglite will prove to be as effective if need be, but won't raise as much suspicion.

Gee thanks for such an insightful reply. I got the thing for 20 bucks from someone I know, so excuse the fuck out of me for getting a good deal on a potential life saving device. My somewhat unintentional acquisition of said device sparked the question. Fuck off!

I take it you have not had encounters with hobo's which put your safety in jeopardy. I was merely asking a legitimate question about something we are all familiar with.

Flame on, flamer!

....

I explore in East St. Louis alot, maybe you are not familiar with an area like that?

Obviously not using a weapon is the best bet, however if you're cornered, then what?

Or if they start running after you when your back is turned?

Both of which have happened to me. Have none of you experienced this?!

I'm not some n00b as some of you super cool l337's have insinuated. Kthxbye.

I've explored dangerous urban areas for years, lately my new stomping grounds are downtown LA (skid row) and East LA... bad neighborhoods, both.

My strategy is #1 avoidance, #2 talking, #3 running. 99% of the time avoidance has worked. The rest of the time, talking has. Have never had to run. Standing and fighting is a really bad idea.

That said, yes these places are dangerous and I exercise all the caution and stealth that the places warrant. I do carry pepper spray as a backup, and would use Krav Maga if I had to.

I beg to differ sir.

If you had any street smarts at all you wouldnt need a stun gun and I'll bet the SLPD will take you to task just for carrying that thing around let alone zappin some poor old bum that scares you.

Now instead of trying to impress everyone with what your 500000v toy will do to a hobo I suggest you print the following quote and refer to it periodically as it pretty well sums it all up. Read it quick before my usual reply deletion occurs:

Posted by Freak
Yeah, give em a candy bar or something. A zapper is stupid, as others have said there's no way to know if someone has a heart condition, is on drugs, or has other factors which can make it more deadly. The cops kill people all the time with Tazers, and they're at least kind of trained to use them.

If you absolutely, positively are scared to death of people in a location, don't go! Remember, it's their home you're invading, they have more right to it, even if both of you are breaking the law. They're getting a better use out of the place as a home than you are as an hour of middle class hobby entertainment.

If you insist on going but are still worried, bring more people! If you have to have a weapon for intimidation, find something on the site, then there's no fun charges tacked on to trespassing if/when you get caught. Explorers have been charged with all kinds of felonies in the past for having knives and other things on them when caught. A chunk of rebar or something looks menacing and can be thrown away when you leave.

If you have to use the weapon, then you fucked up. As any legit self defense instructor will tell you, the best defense is to avoid having to use a weapon. Announce yourself before entering rooms, don't sneak up on people, don't surprise people, be aware of your surroundings at all times, and don't cause a bad situation. Remember it's just a HOBBY, there's no reason to harrass or surprise anyone, or push their personal space.

ps: youre not the first person to explore tough neighborhoods, sorry to bring that to your attention

Indeed. I believe the done thing is to post pictures of kittens now.

NB: probably best not to stun gun the kittens.

Sorry boys. Locked!

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.
