that would be my bet. granted i've only been around for a month but i can definitely see where people come from. i mean, if you think about it you have these great locations that we love because of the fact they have been forgotten, yielding some pretty cool places to explore and either photograph or simply wander for the sake of ooo's and ahhh's etc. when you give away the location it can ruin the sense of these places because you don't know exactly what other people are doing there. for me, it has to do with the fact that you essentially don't want people coming in who don't think the same way (i.e. breaking shit) and then ruin it for the people who are actually on the same page. it's just to control and try to preserve these places that tend to attract some unfortunate circumstances on themselves. but yeah... my 2 cents

| | | Posted by STACKflyer well, I have a lot to contribute to the site when I get full membership. I just dont want to explore too much not knowing if where im going is still there.
|
Hook up with a local group or two. Alot of explorers aren't compatible with one another and that needs to be taken into consideration. Each group has its rules bla bla. Once you meet a few and explore with them, they will usually dish out the good stuff, or take you there etc.

Understood, but some of the most amazing locations that most of us have found or been too were not guaranteed to be there when we arrived at the door.

| | | Posted by Air 33 But when lots lurk and don't contribute themselves that generally creates hostility amongst people. I find new members also don't get this idea at all and expect to be fed locations from more experienced people.
|
In all fairness sometimes new members (especially from smaller cities) don't necessarily know where to find abandoned locations, thus the need for feed. I notice that some newcomers post rehashed locations and some newcomers post new locations that aren't listed in the DB. It's not always about freeloading but sometimes about the ability to find fresh locations. [last edit 12/3/2008 12:47 AM by Intrinsic - edited 2 times]

| | | For the really nice, difficult locations it seems wrong just telling people where they are. Sometimes what makes a great place into an incredible one is how hard it is to find. When you start telling people it is not as cool anymore. Taking people to really nice, difficult locations, however, is really cool. Also, a little bit of practice makes finding locations becomes a lot easier. [last edit 12/3/2008 2:42 AM by Seventh Stage - edited 1 times]

There are some advantages to sharing locations in way of guided tours. If you are on a strict time limit, it's nice to have a guided tour. This works both ways of course. When Exkalibur and Unlisted paid us a visit, they had a guided tour of one of Sudbury's mines. While it wasn't much of a tour and time only permitted for one location, it saved time rather than having to look for the site and it's features. This worked the other way as well when I had a few days to spare in Woodstock. PhilG (he's very quiet on here don't you know) and Trains offered to show me around and certainly saved a lot of wrong turns and such. Would I do this for basic members? Probably not unless they had posted some portfolio pics to show that they have explored with a camera and not a spray can. [last edit 12/3/2008 4:20 AM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

I can only speak for myself here when I offer these suggestions: 1) Contribute to the forums 2) Post photos of your own explorations 3) Get to know any full members in your area, explore with them and ask them for a recommendation in due time. Without #2 or #3 there's really no way of ascertaining your true intentions and it's a trust-based system. I've seen people get full access in less than a week but I highly suspect that it was based on a recommendation. Other members have been on for a couple of years and remain basic members. You get out what you put in. Edit: It would also be helpful if you listed your location in your profile so that other locals could see it.

| | | Don't take my 3 year star as a sign you'll never get full membership... I joined 3 years ago, then simply never returned. A few weeks ago, I tried signing up again, but found out I already had an account. Signed in (after fudging with the PW a bit to remember it), and voila....here I am, basically a newbie who looks like hes been a scrub for 3 years! :p I'm keeping an eye out for members from my area, hoping to meet up with 'em some day. I've done some exploring on my own throughout the years...though I didn't have a camera. All I left were footprints, and all I took were memories. Wish I would've had a camera back then...but ah well.

| | | I've got a couple of nice locations shot in Scotland and knowledge about them but I'm not sharing them really because there is so small amount of urban explorers in my city. And there seems to be a lot of taggers and self-proclaimed graff artists. Wait a little bit longer and earn the membership. There are plenty of locations in the DB. Cheers and have a nice day, Tim

| | | This is a cool thread because it gives you a feel for the basic honor system here.I have been a member for about a month or so and everyone seems pretty cool.I've posted some threads,(some good, some stupid!),and as soon as I get a camera that doesn't suck eggs, I'll post some photos. I was wondering though, is there a way to add to the LDB without being a full member? I haven't checked into it so I just thought I'd ask.

| | | I don't know or talk to anyone on here for the most part. However, if someone was to ask me for information I would gladly give out info on a few conditions: 1) I could research the person 2) They seemed like a decent person 3) They would be willing to meet me in person I consider myself a pretty good judge of character and intentions, so if you fail to impress me, you fail.

| | | I will share my locations with anyone. As long as you come out and explore it with me. Posting reckless information about locations so somebody can pull it up in a Google search is just silly. That's how I originally found this website, I was looking for some information on a location I wanted to check out. I could have very easily been the site owner, a security guard, or the 5-0. I thought the trust system UER has was silly when I first joined but now that I've been around for a while and seen some of the stuff that goes down I realize that not only is it a good idea, it's a must for a site with this much popularity.
