| | | How do you feel about exploring alone? I am unsure. Is it better to be by myself, it's easier to be un-noticed and get away. Or is it better to have someone come along incase of unstable floors, bodily injury, or help to get to a hard to get to place. Personally I would like to have someone to come along, it makes me braver. I moved about a year ago, and I don't know anyone where I live that I could get to come with. Think I should spend my time looking for another person, or should I just get on with it?

| | | I would say that it depends on the location if there is danger of falling or getting trapped then I would have a partner or two if it was a safe location then I would not have a problem going solo

| | | i go alone 99% of explores. if you're doing a drain, tunnel, etc go with at least one other. if you're doing a structure in an active area, go alone or with a very few people you trust. if you're in a remote area i don't think it matters too much one way or another; but if you are going outside cell phone range, a companion isn't a bad idea. i've been lucky over the years, and have never had a situation where i'm alone and wish i wasn't. if you have a trustworthy couple to go with you, this is usually wisest in some cases.

I fully agree with this. There have been a few things that I have done on my own, but the majority has been with at least one other trustworthy person. It really is dependent on the location.
when you are here, you wish you were there. but once you're there, it soon becomes a here, and you again wish to be there instead of here... we will never be completely satisfied. |

| | | I've gone on most of my trips alone, but vastly prefer having someone along. It makes everything safer and more fun, and having an extra set of eyes means you're less likely to discover something very cool. And as far as the additional risk of getting caught goes, there are advantages to not being alone there as well.

| | | I usually do not enjoy going alone as much. I will if I can't find anyone to accompany me, but I am always afraid I will somehow injure myself (although it has not happened yet, thank goodness). Also, two sets of eyes are better than one when it comes to looking out for security. If you have to do anything sketchy to make an entrance it is always nice to have a look out.

| | | Active sites I don't mind going alone, and I'd bring two other people at the most. Drains, mines, and all the other considerably dangerous things, I would definitely not go alone. Regardless of how you think things will go, things can always happen. When you're half a mile down a drain and slip into a pit filled with hypodermic needles and no ladders on the side, you're definitely going to wish you brought a friend. That being said, for the most part, I enjoy the thought of having a companion with me. I have a friend that I'm pretty sure I'll be doing most of my exploring with, for the various reasons everyone has posted before (lookout, safer, boosts over fences, etc). If you can, you should try to do the same. The security disadvantage pales in comparison to the advantages of two minds, eyes, and ears. In your situation, I would definitely try to look for a person in your area, or at least don't explore anywhere hazardous until you do.

| | | I tend to be more cautious when exploring alone, and it really helps. I tend to get rushed when being with a group. At the same time, you HAVE to be more cautious when exploring alone, as you don't have everyone looking out for each other, nor someone to get help if something goes wrong. However, I tend to prefer to be alone in the first place, but I think it takes a bit more courage. I'm less likely to go to a place at all if I don't have someone else with me.

| | | i've injured myself once that was enough to send me to hospital...and at least twice received gashes that although minor was just good to know i wasn't alone to deal with it go it alone if you feel like, some people prefer the solo missions, can do things your way, not pushed for time or other agendas etc personally i always go exploring with at least one person and for all the reasons already mentioned. If im alone it's usually scouting, i won't completely enter a location but spend time making mental notes so i can return with someone to check it out properly. *wanders why someone with a one yr star is asking such a question....**scratches head - search the rookie forums

It's like this, I used to live in MI about a year ago, and knew some people there, and life was good. I moved to Indianapolis and have been out of it for a while because I don't know anyone else that's able and willing in the area. Hope that explains why [last edit 12/2/2008 2:11 AM by Brent - edited 1 times]

Well, depends on where you're going. If you're infiltrating somewhere that is not abandoned, going alone can be fun and exciting. If you're going into abandoned buildings and you're a girl, meeting up with gangs, hobos, crack dealers, and scrappers might not be so fun. In fact, scratch that. Being alone and being any gender in that situation might suck. Not that I haven't met some awesome homeless people, drug dealers, scrappers, or crack dealers. Not everyone you meet is going to do you harm. But I think that sometimes, explorers forget that there are bad apples out there, and you can meet them at any time - not just while exploring - and so you need a buddy. That being said, I know a lot of people who go out alone. Hell, I even have been scouting alone, and I turn it into an impromptu explore. I shouldn't, though, and I have promised myself that I won't do it anymore. So obviously, I'd recommend against solo exploring.

| | | Ideal number of ppl in a group is 2-3. 1 is not a good idea unless you are exploring an active site and 4-8 are not good unless you are draining.

| | | I usually end up going it alone because on normal walks I can't get into the "Zone" of photography that I need to be in with someone else distracting me. If I'm planning on hitting a storm drain or something dangerous I always make sure to contact either a family member or close friend right before entering to tell them what I'm doing. This isn't perfect but if I call my mom and tell her I'm looking into a drain at X location and I'll call her back by X hour, there is at least somebody who knows what's going on in case I am injured. Beyond that, I'd rather be injured badly alone for a while with help in the future than have two people injured badly in the same spot without having told anyone where they went.

I'll be back in the Lafayette area within a month or two. It was pretty devoid of explorers while I was there. If I have time between school / work maybe I'll join you in Indy for some kind of adventure
