And it all begins...

So I've recently ventured into the world of *gasp* HDR. My thoughts on HDR shots is the same as children. They should be seen, not heard. Basically I'm trying to bring forth the full tones on an off-balanced image without melting someone's retina's out.

So this is my first one ever. I like the results so far, but I'd like to get some 3rd party feedback on it as well. Especially on my goal of using HDR that doesn't look HDRish if you know what I mean.

The reason for HDR on this one was a really dark foreground with the person almost being completely black and the skyline in the background being very bright.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

An excellent save!

Thanks guys. I did one other one last night. In this shot it was really dark around the silo's and the verticals. I believe I brightened them up, but now I fear that I made the overall photo way to bright. And that was after 3 tries each time trying to not make it so bright.

What do you think? Please lay it on me.

First one is great, Trent, you do a good job making it more subtle.

Second one is a little too bright, but my monitor here at work has been known to have a pretty high gamma. I'd have to see it on my laptop.

Me goin' legit would be like JarJar on speech therapy.

The red seems to pop a bit too much but the rest looks great.

That's what I was thinking too, Shelly, but reds are most affected by bad settings on a monitor. I might calibrate my monitor to see it again.

Trent, I just calibrated my monitor and took another look. This is very good. The reds are a little bright, but considering the brilliance of all the leaves that day, I wouldn't hold it against you. Some of the leaves really were about that level of red.

Me goin' legit would be like JarJar on speech therapy.

Thanks guys. I'll have to see what I can do tonight. Though this 2nd one will never top the first shot I posted. The top one is probably in the top 5 list of my best shots evar. Lol, too bad that RochesterUE guy is in the shot.

that first shot is very well done, and doesn't immediately look like an hdr, which to me is what you want.

Actually, I think he makes the shot. Remove him and the picture becomes another urban horizon that's kinda boring.

The second shot, as folks are already saying, has way too much pop in the colors. The red, in particular, but even the yellow / green leaves are too much for the rest of the picture to bear.

Oh, hehe I was just kidding about that part. Taking that shot was kind sneaky. I only really had about a 1 second window to get it. Fortunately I had the camera all setup to go and he walked into my shot and turned to look over his should quickly. Once I took it I was betting on it being a keeper.

Yah I'm in total agreement there. This one definitely needs to be re-worked. Thanks!

this is a good reason for making an HDR shot; not to make pictures on a bright, sunny day look grotesque and cartoony.

nice job, t.

This is not bad HDR (says me.)
It doesn't look like a comicbook or a Kinkaid painting.
No real suggestions for improvement.
What you've done is really the only way to kill those blown out white skies.
I think the average viewer would not know immediately that it's HDR.
