Road Trip

I will be travelling from Dallas to south east Arkansas on Wednesday. I will have a watchful eye out while driving for any interesting places to explore. Anyone have any suggestions? I will be taking I20-E from Dallas all the way to Monroe,LA. I will take US165 north from there all the way up to McGehee, Ark.

Raticus may have some suggestions for the Tyler/Longview/Marshall area, and I don't have any particular hints (it's been a long time since I drove around Shreveport/Bossier). But...

Definitely get off of I-20 and take US 80 instead. You can go slow as you want (pretty much) on the old highway, and you can take interesting side roads at will. All you'll see from the Interstate are billboards, and the occasional old barn with a faded "SEE ROCK CITY" on the roof. US 80 goes all the way from Dallas to Vicksburg and beyond -- you'll seldom even see I-20.

Also, look for roads called "Old [town name] Road". Looking at the Google Maps around Monroe, there are two of them parallel to US 165 (see SH 139 and SH 140 -- the numbering hints that they were bypassed at about the same time).

Hey! McGehee is my hometown! Anyway, the most notable site I can think of is Jerome between Montrose and Dermott on US-165 in Arkansas. Jerome, during World War II was the site of the Jerome War Relocation Center. The site was used to house Japanese-Americans amidst paranoia and fear of an uprising during the war. It was also used to house German P.O.W.s. Not much is left outside of a monument and an incinerator smokestack. There are also two or three giant silos/holding tanks on the grounds. It will be on the right, you can't miss it once you pass a tree line.

Have some in depth information...

Yeah I have been to the old smokestack in Jerome. My grandparents have lived in Mcgehee forever. I spent pretty much every summer there from 1980 until 1989.

I loathe that town, I never want to go back. I wish I could remember more, but most of the stuff there has been burned or torn down. At least the locations I know of thirteen years ago have. Have fun.
