| | | Although there are plenty of threads on this subject in the archived section, I thought it'd be good to create a new one. I got caught by the landowner while exploring a nearby gold dredge a few months ago. He didn't seem to annoyed since the place is visited often by locals and simply told my group to leave. It could've been prevented had I not brought a bunch of my friends and left our stuff in plain sight. Lesson learned. While gaining access to a location in Kenai, a guard on a four-wheeler and a pickup came within feet of my group while we were moving a pipe off a trail leading around the gate. He unlocked the gate to let the truck out, locked it and rode away. I played it safe and we walked to the building. Hasn't kept me from exploring though.

| | | It's quite true that your chances of getting caught increase (maybe exponentially) with the number of people in your group. Nice to travel in VERY small numbers, with people you REALLY know and REALLY trust. And yeah, hiding your vehicle, I think, is the number 2 factor in getting caught. My truck has often been the albatross around my neck in these things.

| | | It's also location dependant as well. Wide open places are fine for large groups, but always be diligent. Up here people like to use abandonments for target practice and parties most of the time, so security measures aren't really enforced since the next group of kids will find a way in.

| | | Almost got caught a couple times... There's an abandoned college campus near Denver that I'd visited several times at night, when I found out it was scheduled for demo I went during the day and spent about 5 hours walking around taking photos. On my way out I got maybe 2 blocks away and FOUR sheriffs passed me and turned into the campus. They didn't confront me (despite the fact I was carrying multiple cameras) but needless to say I RAN back to my motorcycle!

| | | If you explore enough you will get caught. It is inevitable. No matter how safe or cautious you think you are being you will eventually round a corner and poof! I have never been caught.

| | | Its true that you will most likely be seen at least, but there is a difference between being seen and being caught. Always run if you know you can get away. Otherwise just be civil if you are actually caught.

| | | I've got a kind of embarrassing getting caught story. It comes from my recent "Biggest Disappointment Ever" thread. Basically, myself and a friend were trying to get to an abandoned amusement park. The front gate was crawling with workers, but we found a mountain next to the site where there was nobody. We found a small hole in the fence and slipped in. After about five minutes of following a dried up streambed, we got onto a path and saw an old man sleeping on a rock further up the hill. We figured he was homeless and went by quietly without waking him. We kept walking, until we rounded a corner, where up ahead there was an old guy wearing what appeared to be a uniform who was doing something and hadn't seen us. We quickly and quietly turned and left. Shortly after, we could hear someone yelling from that direction. We hurried ahead, and I even thought about waking the homeless man so he wouldn't get caught. Instead, we climbed the mountain slope, and made it all the way to the top. ...Where we discovered, we were on a popular hiking trail frequented by many, many elderly Koreans. We finally made it down into the park to find that it had already been demolished, and saw a father walking his very young son through the zone.

| | | I have been caught maybe 8-10 times over the years, with the worst outcome being put in the back of a cruiser for about 20 minutes while the cop satisfied himself that I really was just looking around and not vandalizing a site. When I was younger running away was always my first choice (btw as I found out above some policemen are quite fast); 25 years later I could now only outrun the most geriatric of security guards/property owners so I am direct - if I know I am going to be caught I approach the person and talk to them. I am usually just told to leave but I have had property owners give me a tour/history of the site on a few occasions, which was great. I rarely explore active places anymore other than hotels (as I travel frequently for work) but when I did I always tried to act like I was supposed to be there. It's amazing how far that goes if the person who sees you isn't 100% sure you AREN'T supposed to be there.

| | | Wave to the newbie! ;p I'm always afraid of getting caught. Well, not so much getting caught as getting arrested. I'm less afraid of wild animals, dirty hobos, and crazy crackheads coming after me and/or hurting me, but the fear is still there. So far, I've been lucky....no injuries or arrests to my record! EDIT: Member for 3 years? Wow I must've forgotten all about this place. Whoops. [last edit 11/27/2008 3:35 AM by WarBird69 - edited 1 times]

| | | years ago, i used to explore an abandoned facility close to me. i knew where the security office was, the 1 officer that worked there, cameras were, how to get around/under them. in the center of the facility there were no cameras, but they had those turn keys do the guard could prove he did his rounds. so i moved quick through those areas, just in case he was doing his rounds. i was never spotted, but i would only allow 1-3 friends to come and follow my lead. but when one of the kids i brought decided to bring a larger group they were caught, delivered to cops and brought to their homes. no idea if it's on their records or not. but it also comes down to if you're getting spotted by a cop or a private guard, what kind of town/city you're in and the persons demeanor. i mean, if you come across a guard who is getting paid what he thinks is not enough, he might just ask you to leave. maybe he has no incentive to process you. same with a cop. if he's in a busy city maybe he doesn't have time to fill paper work and deal with you just walking around a place. so he'll just tell you to leave. conversely, if the guard or cop is board out of his mind, then catching you might be the most exciting thing to happen to them. so they'll process you, etc, etc.

same accidentally set off an alarm at a construction site a few days ago that could easily be heard all over the campus it was on. probly was the closest time i've come to anybody seeing me or hearing me. i just left really fast and didn't see any cops so it really wasn't anything threatening. that all being said the sound of an alarm going off is probly one the most terrifying things i've ever heard.

| | | got caught by park police once when exploring an abandoned hospital. fortunately for me, there was another group there smoking weed in the other building who were apparently between the ages of 15-17. we got a parking ticket and made us leave.. i'm not sure what happened to the other group, but they were still there when we left.

| | | From what I have found, just be personable and friendly and you will be fine. I was spotted leaving an abandoned fort last week by a couple in their 40's, and it went perfect. I walked down with my camera still on the tripod, slipped under the fence and started a conversation. Next thing I know, I am leading them under the fence and showing them how to get in so they could take pictures too. Just be personable, and for christ sake, don't run like an idiot. You risk injuring yourself, facing more penalties, and worst of all, falling and breaking your camera.

| | | I was 'sploring the abandonment north of me (The infamous remainder of the Northern California Triad) and my buddy got wore out. I told him to walk down to the locked access gate, and I trudged the two miles back to my car. I was walking through the orchard, and some farm hand was waiting for me at my car. My bad since it was in a rural area and a big purple sedan sticks out like a sore thumb. He questioned me, I was honest, he took my name (Fake) and plate number (Real) and told me never to come back. I've there a few times since, no trouble.

| | | Another one I just remembered, after exploring an abandoned hotel, I was on my way out when I saw a random man standing in the parking lot. There was also a chick down there taking photos. I waited for them to leave five minutes, ten minutes, and then I got impatient. I just walked out, jumped down, strolled past him, and when he yelled at me I said "I don't understand" in Korean and kept going. Six to eight weeks later, my freshly laminated race card came in the mail.

| | | I'm still new at this, but from what I've experienced if you just act you're supposed to be there people don't really question you. I held a door open for a man in uniform even, and he said "thanks," and didn't give me a second glance. This would probably only apply to places that are still operating. I've never explored any abandoned areas yet so I wouldn't know, but chances are if you're exploring an abandoned industrial site, just acting like you're supposed to be there wouldn't really cut it.

Ive been doing this for about 8 years and only have been caught 3 times, none were my fault tho. Other kids there who had gotten caught ratted my group out. I bring no more than 3 people if going to a place that is high risk. If its legal to be there, who cares how many people you bring.

| | | I've been exploring since I could walk and thus far have never been caught. There have been times where I was almost caught, and times where I had no idea how I didn't get caught, but so far so good. It's the ninja skills ;) Nah, I'm just really careful. I never explore with more than 3(ish) people, I make sure I know the people aren't stupid, and I research the place as much as I can before I explore. I'm also small so it's easier to hide heh.

| | | I've been seen a couple times, but not caught. The closer was when we were leaving a building, crawling through a hole in a door, there was a security guard about 100' just staring at us. I shouldn't have relied on my friend to look out, he gets tunnel vision when we explore, I think. He didn't say anything to us. I think because we were so far off, he probably didn't have any backup, and didn't want to just walk up to two dudes who could possibly be dangerous. We left after that.
