haha you can't "see" asbestos...its part of floor tiles, ceiling tiles, the glue to hold these things up, to hold wall tile up, carpet down, that type of shit...it's the dust that is dangerous, so don't go snorting it up the nose, k?

not a hippie so lay off

I never edit photos, that's cheating to me.

There are two types of asbestos. Friable and non friable. Friable is what you cant see as it is in dust form. Non friable you can see for it is in its consumer form like Hippy@heart said in flooring tiles, ductwork some masonry and brick and so forth. Non friable is really nothing to worry about, but still I would leave it lie what with Murphys Law and my luck lol.

my lungs are FULL of asbestos! cough... cough... christmas so soon?
asbestos insulation on piping- its covered in what looks alot like a cast you'd get for a broken bone, under the cast-like wrapping is a white fiberous material, when its wet it looks alot like wet chalk!
asbestos is "NOT AS DANGEROUS" when its wet, because when it is disturbed it can't become air-bourn thus entering your lungs.
for some stupid reason if you have to get past some asbestos without disturbing it, soaking it with water, some kind of liquid or pee... would be your best option other then disturbing it and taking a big toke of cancer
ahhhh plumbers lung fun for the whole family!
hope this can help!

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Holding your breath is one idea. A dust mask can REALLY help a lot. Dont forget about tiles both floor and ceiling can be made from the stuff. I just try not to stir shit up - which is another reason not to smash places up.

If you are going to be going somewhere that may have asbestos you should wear a mask that is rated at LEAST N-100. Anything less would be uncivilized and would only protect against larger irritants such as common dust. N-100 masks will protect against asbestos and lead paint dust. If your really paranoid or you plan on doing this alot just fork out the cash and buy a rebreather/respirator. They have interchangeable canister filters for different irritants. It is recommended that you have it professionally fitted for proper protection.

Asbestos gives me the creeps, not many things worry me but that definitely does. I am an electrician and I see that shite all the time at work. Kinda makes me mad that some building owners will leave that shite up in some places, and take it down in others. Places where I have to work around it. Sorry I ramble once again.

You could always bring a spray bottle with you and wet the shit down too
Lot of time and effort in that though And to be honest when I have come across it wrapping around pipes it was usually in a steam tunnel and it was very damp anyway.

YUMMY!

hey kids, don't forget fibreglass insulation can be just as fun and itchy as asbestos...
your best bet is to carry an asbestos-rated respirator/mask(which also can be good for dust and other particulates). respirators are light and easy to fit into your backpack, other than lugging around a full spray bottle, also what will you do when the spray bottle is empty?
a good asbestos rated respirator will set your back about $50, and about $10~$15 for new cartridges the respirator will last you for years if you take good care of it. its a small price to pay for your overall health in the long run! may of us here will be diagnosed with what i call "Explorers-Lung" in the near future... protect your lungs!

Asbestos is like everything else when urban exploring, use good common sense and you'll probably be ok... That being said, carrying a spray bottle does limited good, if your walking asbestos floor tiles, your not going to be able to spray down the entire thing, and lets be honest spraying down anything to try to keep from knocking up dust is a silly endeavor. If your concerned buy a respirator, if your really concerned wear a Tyvek suit every time you go exploring. If you buy a respirator consider this, if your walking and brush up against pipes with asbestos, there is now asbestos on your clothes once you take off your mask and brush your clothes with your hands, now you've stirred up asbestos dust. If your like me your realistic and don't bother with the respirator and just don't kick up dust and don't hang around when you start to taste lots of it...

You should be okay as long as you don't stir the junk up.

There's asbestos in millions of places that we don't know about, and we're fine, all because it wasn't bothered.

If you're worried about it, get a respirator.

But as long as you're not living in a place with exposed asbestos, you'll most likely be fine.

Yes, but the asbestos is limited when it's stuck to your clothes - a good brush off/pat down when you leave a site, and before you take off your mask, is not going to give as much exposure as kicking around in an abandonment. Usually people aren't rubbing up against the pipes.

I find wearing a mask is good for preventing the few particles you might breathe in in a place. Sure, you have some on your clothes. If you are obsessed about protecting against all of it, sure get a Tyvek suit. Or just change clothes after going and keep your mask on. Course, where you gonna find a place to change without getting in your car?

More realistically, it just reduces the amount of time you spend breathing in the particles/bad air. If you get respirators with VOC protection, you can enter a bum infested room without smelling hobo pee (and who wants to smell that?) while your buddies without masks are throwing up LOL!

Anyway - masks help IMO. You will see lots of pictures of people exploring with them on on UER. Go look up some self-portrait threads. You don't have to see the asbestos to be breathing it in.

Tiles are not a worry. The majority of them fall within the realm of 1-6% under analysis. I've seen air sampling data from projects where tile had to be pulled up in a "friable" fashion and there was very little fiber count in the data.

You need to be worried about stuff like Thermal System Insulation, Spray On Fire Proofing, and the like:

Air Cell looks like cardboard:

Mag/Packed/Cal-Sil all look pretty much alike. If it's white and powdery, treat it with caution:

Fireproofing:

Blown in attic insulation:

Vermiculite attic and wall insulation:

Skim Coats:
