| | | Heres my attempt at HDR < on 10/23/2008 8:30 PM >
| | | I just got a book called "Practical HDRI" by Jack Howard and I thought I'd give it a shot. The subjects are nothing special they were just within walking distance of my dorm. Let me know what you guys think. I'll try this with some abandonment shots that I'll be taking this weekend. 1.

| | | I'm no professional photographer, so I'm shooting from the hip here. I like the way HDR works in #1 and #2. There are subtle differences in each of the colors and HDR makes those stand out. The bricks, for example, have really miniscule color differences in a normal shot but are very bold in here. But when you have a lot of colors like in #3 and #4, the added contrast and saturation aren't as appealing. I've wanted to try HDR myself, but have been slow to attempt it because I'm not quite sure I understand the theory and therefore won't really get the practice. What I'm learning so far is that HDR works wonders on images with lots of natural shades of a few (very few) colors. Again, good work with #1 and #2. I know what my eyes like.

| | | Watch those haloes around the roof on #1 - the effect overall is a bit too strong, I think. Some of those might lend themselves more to exposure blending, rather than HDR, too, as the areas of high contrast seem fairly distinct.

I took your advice with the exposure blending and it seemed kind of bland to me. How do I avoid the halos?

Hey, that's great that you tried the blending - sorry they turned out bland As for the halos, It'll depend on what software you're using: is there a 'strength' control, or something similar? Anyway, you might find that adjusting to fix that problem makes the rest of the image less exciting - there's always the option of doing two different HDR compositions, then blending those together!

| | | Metawaffle, you seem to always have the best advice. Here is the blended image. I think the detail was lost in the lower portion of the image. I am using Photomatix and this is my first project with it but so far I LOVE IT!

| | | To me HDR works best to make pictures of motives with lots of nuances. Personally i find a lot of HDR-pictures to be "too much", its sometimes looks like the camera is on acid. The HDR-pictures i think looks the best are often the ones that you really cant tell if they are HDR or not. If someone who aren't familiar with the technique are impressed with how you captured all the colors you are probably spot on. Bearing in mind this is how i feel about HDR, i must say that #2 looks great.

| | | In picture #1 (which I really love - but don't go any further as then it will become over the top) on the door there is a white rectangle, probably a notice. This has a blue edge on top and a red edge below. Is that an effect of HDR in itself, or did the camera shift one pixel between taking different images? Tijmen

| | | Number one and two are nice, maybe tone it down a little bit. Not feeling three though. It looks almost like a 3-D effect, like multiple pictures are overlapping.

| | | I've had my share of brick buildings in the past, and I can say with confidence that there's too much red or orange in the first set of your pics. The second pic was better, but does not capture the true sense of those buildings. Keep the realism, but also adjust the contrast and color in a photo editing software, like Lightroom. Good job otherwise.
