your darkest shadow, my oldest friend; the world's become ashes, this is the end.

| | | Anyone ever been up to the former rocket fuel test site at +33° 50' 58.16", -117° 42' 9.97" ? Though there are no standing surface structures left, I heard an unsubstantiated story that some underground infrastructure remains. I am dubious (couldn't corroborate it) but am also fond enough of hiking that I plan to do some hiking on the site just to check it out. I swung by to do a perimeter recon the other day and noted the access was cut off (gated and locked) at the base of Santa Ana Canyon Rd. The closest inconspicuous parking was a nearby church, within walking distance of the road up. Another option is parking on residential streets across the 241 and hiking down, under and up. I'll provide info when I get out that way. Any who know more than I do, your input would be appreciated.

| | | ISoar: You're welcome to join anytime, just let me know when you're in the area. Dave: Not the AeroJet facility (by the way, have they finished tearing it down yet? If not, I need to get there before they do). McDonnell Douglas had a facility above Anaheim Hills and I spoke with an engineer who referred to underground infrastructure. I've heard of cases like this where the surface structures are torn down (and these have been long since), but the underground simply sealed. Just got me curious. Could be nothing, but worth a hike to see.

| | | 1. get a mountain bike. you can EASILY get over to those coordinates on one. Plus, it's fun and excercisingly cool /mtb plug 2. Dave, you can just drive up there now. You can talk to the forest service (or whoever runs the santa anas, I forget), and lease a key for $100 if you've got a reason to be back there. that thing will give you access to anything in that area that has a road leading to it. Also, the skyline gate in corona is often open, but I'm not sure how many other gates you'd need to pass to get where you want. We did a mountain bike ride up there a few weeks ago.

| | | I'd love to be proven wrong about this, and I don't want to sound like a nattering nabob of negativity. I have no idea whether there is/was an extensive underground component to the facility in question or not, though generally speaking, a rocket test facility should have underground cable & possibly fuel corridors, but most staffed control structures should be in above-ground bunkers. These days, it's much more difficult in a legal sense to just bulldoze the topside stuff but just seal-up below-ground structures & forget about them, due to environmental laws as well as safety/negligence concerns. If it was a rocket test site, that means there's guaranteed to have been toxic fuels & solvents spilled onto the ground. Remains of that would seep into below-ground structures there. If underground stuff is just 'sealed up,' rainwater is eventually going to seep inside, possibly causing flooding & spreading the hazardous materials over a wide path. Even if dry inside, a 'sealed up' structure could cause the HAZMAT to ferment & eventually rupture (BLEVE) a very potent flume into the atmosphere, 20 years from now when they've built an apartment complex on the site.
In the old days, yeah, cover it over & forget it. These days, there are too many lawyers on both side of the issue making too much $$, plenty of environmental monitoring & remediation firms who'd be happy to call in a tip if they though it might result in the getting a fat contract, plus these days it's likely that there's some sort of residential community encroaching on the property & they'll be scrutinizing, protesting, etc. any perceived lapses in remediation (have you been reading up on the Rocketdyne/Boeing Santa Susanna mess?).

| | | What Hoolie's saying is true. Here in Canada, we're seeing a big difference in the cleanups being done after the closure of mines compared to what used to happen. Further, it's retroactive. They're going back and rehabilitating places that had been contaminated before including old radar sites (infamous for pcb contamination).
