Crazy drain here in CA

So I was puttering around on google earth and found this:

It is a "glory hole" spillway located at the south-eastern corner of Lake Berryessa right next to monticello dam. From what I read about it, the water spills down the drain at least 100 ft, then assumedly exits at the only outfall here:

It would be impossible to go down when the water is flooding in, but CA lakes have been quite dry lately, so I imagine some hardcore explorer might feel the urge to rappel down into it when the lake is below the spillway. Like here:

Anyone know more about this thing?

It would be a thrill to visit a glory hole.

Some of the Cave Clan guys roped down one of those in a remote Australian dam - I think there are pics in the db, but you might not be able to see it until you're a full member.

I wonder if you can ride one of those things. They have to be smooth from all the water spilling down them.

I heard there are a couple in NorCal. I was so close to one when i was Redding, but never went to see it.

This used to be a skating spot a long time ago, right when sealed bearings and urethane wheels came out. So I was reading a fairly recent (2000?) story of skaters going there (somewhere on the web) and followed the directions and I found out there's a plug in it, not at all like the old historic skateboarder photos. It would have required a boat, swimming or rock climbing to raach the splash pad. So, yeah I saw it just like any visitor does, and before it was plugged it was a big pipe with a nice inlet. Now it's plugged and probably hooked up to spin generators. It was cool to see though.

edit: OMG a moment of clarity!!! It turns out that the big blast of water shooting out of the face of the dam (picture 2) is what is blocked and I thought for sure was the glory hole outlet. The one shown blasting hooks up to elsewhere, it's something else. Cool cool, another trip for real!!! Some Wiki (?) says the pipe comes out of the FACE of the dam - true, about 100 yards away... Apparently I could not see the outlet that mattered from the road or the lower trail, unless you pass a locked gate. Totally unseeable from the viewpoints I had. Uh, so close but lost!! Look at the picture and the glory hole outlet is on the left.

I want to say that there are some generator mechanisms somewhere within the piping.. As much fun as it would be to ride through it, I think you would pop out as confetti.

Though I'm no expert on the issue.

I think that it's a replacement for a normal overflow, so it should be a direct shot all the way through

If anyone is going to go down at a glory hole... wait... I mean, I'm all for repelling down that thing! I'd make the trip for it.

I've been up that way before and seen that. I think it's an overflow spillway and no turbines are in it. If there were, it would probably be grated.

Would be a wild ride down that thing.

Do a google search for glory hole. Lots of good "exploration" to be found out there. Better yet, a google image search.

I didn't take the time to read this whole thread, but I know about this one. Excuse if I'm repeating something already said.

I was invited to go skate this spot earlier this summer with a bunch of old-schoolers. I couldn't make it because of other plans. But, it is still actively ripped and accessible. It's considered a world famous skate spot.

I was told that you need a kayak or else you have to swim. I've been wanting to go here since then but have been too busy.

Here's some link to pics on flickr:

basically jodapics has got a shitload of really good docu type shots of the place.

The time to go is now, before it starts raining.

I went through that flckr account with that set of pictures and it looks like an awesome set!

Theres a thread in the FM section that I can't post in .. yet.. that is everyones secrets.. if I could post there i'd post about this.

It's always been a fear of mine to go into a river / lake and get sucked into the dam and go down turbines or a huge hole like that. The fear won't stop me from going into lake mead or anything here... but it's a fear none the less.

Great set! I'm with dave. Him and Rory can fish, I'll set a line then skate!
