Steam Tunnel Question

Ok, I have a quick question regarding steam tunnels, but first let me say that I am not a complete noob to this forum or UE, as I have been exploring abandoned schools, buildings, ships, drains, etc for over a year now. I am, however, going to throw out my little bit of pride right now because I have like the most basic question regarding entry into steam tunnels. I have been looking for these on my campus since I got here and I know that they're here, but I can't seem to find them. I've explored the sub-basements/basements of several buildings on campus and I've been popping manhole covers right and left under the cover of darkness, but to no avail. Is there any surefire way of finding access to these on most college campuses? Accessing them will be no problem, but first I have to know where the damn door is...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

On my campus, someone in maintenance was kind enough to label every damn pipe in the whole place with what it contained, what building it came from, and what building it's going to. Not only that, but the top door frames of any tunnel-containing doors are labeled, quite cryptically, "TUNNEL from TU to Lat" and the like. I will admit this hasn't helped me too much, since these doors are all locked, but I now have a complete map of my university's tunnels...

When I was at school, I just asked a utility worker. I had no particular interest in draining or exploring the tunnels specifically but since I have a general curiosity for all things so I asked out of, well, curiosity. I was genuinely not mining for exploration information so I had nothing to hide, but it may help if you pretend sustain innocent curiosity for the utility infrastructure of your beloved stomping grounds...maybe for a class project even. The nice gentleman more or less gave me the quick and dirty. "steam goes from here to here and grates here and here or for this and that and so forth". Paraphrasing obviously.

What I learned was that there are frequently "open" grates over the tunnels which carry steam. For whatever reason, I never asked why that was the case but it seems to be true in most places that run steam underground for heat. By "open" I mean a steel framed grate through which you can see the innards of the tunnel. See here: http://www.eyebeam...ves/19grate_lg.jpg
This may not be the case everywhere, but it certainly was at my school. I suppose one could follow an imaginary line to a manhole or access area in or near a building using those grates.

It helped that our campus had it's own power plant and OPP was forthcoming with information.

I've been staring for five minutes, and I still can't see this grating you speak of.

Maybe I should have chosen a google image without a woman in it.

wait until the first light snowfall (if you get that in your area). When that comes, run all around your campus, and look for the manholes that have melted all the snow around them. Or, if your campus is generating their own steam (verses working off of city steam, and the tunnels are just for maintenance to move about) look to the generator house, as everything should stem off of that.

I know that the manhole covers here are both labeled "Steam" and strapped shut from the inside. It was noted that many tunnels have grates over them; that's the case in some places here as well.

In your basements, try to see where the overhead pipes come from. In our steam tunnels, the pipes go into the wall to the basement mechanical rooms of the buildings. Somewhere on campus there is probably a steam plant, unless the steam comes from city utility (in which case you have extra sweetness once you find entry). That building will feed at least a section of the tunnels on your campus.

Are there small odd utility huts anywhere on campus? One of the ones here is a little doghouse-thing that covers an access ladder; it also serves as a fan housing. Good luck searching, and on a well-earned entry.

my campus tunnels are under grated manholes. Look for sections of concrete that isnt the same as the rest of the ground, or a slightly raised rectangle between two buildings, alot of times, steam tunnels run parralell to walking tunnels.

I believe this website will tell you everything you need to know.

And if your college is big enough, this site just might have a map of the tunnels for you.

Enjoy.

The old steam tunnels run all over downtown Lincoln, I've been in portions of them but many areas are sealed up. hint: do some snooping around in the basement stacks of the library.
