I haven't been draining yet, nor do I plan on doing it anytime soon, but if I were to go i'd bring a multi-gas/three gas detector.

you really only have to in a well-sealed storm drain/underground river, or a sewer. Otherwise that's overkill if you ask me.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

Hey guys just be careful interring tunnels, H2s gas can build up in there and this can be deadly.
<Redacted for length>
Just be careful

Unless you are entering Sewars or CSO's Hydrogen Sulfide gas shouldn't be an issue.

in typical MS4's there are certain hazards storm drains are much lower risk for. H2S gas.

ties in with this:

well, storm drains aren't really enclosed. Every few hundred yards (at the most) there's a ventilation chimney, also known as manholes or gutter boxes. Plus if there's water moving, the air is usually moving as well, so it's not like it's been sitting allowing gas to build up.

I'm sure most of us will never encounter gas issues in a stormwater system, and most precautionary measures are overkill. However, there have been at least two separate cases this year in Australia of gas build-up in stormwater drains. One involved a commercial gas supply leak, the other a landfill exhaust issue.

I know I personally have to make an effort to keep from being complacent about these things - it's so easy to get dismissive after a while.
