haha i get it cuz black people steel?
what does being white have to do with exploring a "rough" neihborhood.
there normally wont be gangs in buildings. just the homeless/drug addict. bring a knife.

I don't think he meant in that way....just that two white kids in an urban area makes them look a might conspicuous right off the bat.

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

Hey everybody I'm new to urban exploring but the times I've done it I've loved it. Now the only problem is that most of the abandonments close to where I'm located are in the middle of the worst areas of chicago. So really what Im asking is there a good chance of us (a couple of white kids) having problems with the people who live in these areas before we even get to our ue destination?

Get Barack Obama and all his secret service guys to go with you, he lives in Chicago

Go with your gut..I've done exploring in some of the crappier parts of Newark, NJ (by myself nonetheless) and nothing has happened. I'm sure most of us have been approached by junkies, squatters and assorted characters and 9/10 times nothing happens as long as you're polite and aware (that it's YOU that don't belong). Case the joint and if you go(definitely during the day), bring cash and cigarettes just in case...and remember, everything in life is a calculated risk, you're the only one who can make the call.

I haven't had too many problems in either Detroit or St. Louis at night, but I don't make it a habit of walking either of them all the time with a camera, or dressing nicely when I do it. I also have plenty of experience dealing with all manner of shady bullshit from back in my party days, so I can pretty much smell a bad situation from three blocks away and cross the road to avoid it. Being white kids isn't necessarily going to affect anything, but looking like easy targets will. Last time I was in Detroit I probably got approached by 6-7 different people in bad neighborhoods and ended up bullshitting with each of them for a while... YMMV, I've had good luck so far.

Well I live in Vermont so I can carry a concealed weapon where ever I want and I don't even need a license!(not that I would). I grew up in Philadelphia and I've been in some bad situations in really bad parts of Philly. I'd say go with a group of 3-4 and always make sure you have more than one way out. Don't put yourself in a situation you can't get out of. Keep your eyes open and be ready to react to whatever might happen. Don't bring a knife, you'll end up getting stabbed/shot/beaten if you try and pull that out on someone.

the only reason to pull out a knife one someone is to stab them.

dont pull out a knife unless you know what your doing and you intend to stab them to get away. cuz if you dont they will most likely know that your scared, take it from you and use it against you

that's a really good point. i don't think most of us here would readily stab someone, and pulling out a knife is defiantly going to escalate the situation, and put yourself in more danger.

that's why you bring a squirt gun.

Trying to threat someone with a gun or knife by a person who is scared and untrained for that kind of situation is just asking for trouble.

Most likely, the person confronting you is heavily intoxicated, mentally ill, and more used to violent situations. So he might not be as easily threatened by gun or knife as average-joe-you, and he might also see that only way out is to be ultra-violent towards you.

Use common sense about where to go exploring, instead of going anywhere because you have a gun and you think no one can harm you because of it.

I carry a can of bear mace, which I really think is one of the most effective self defense weapons out there. Unlike the little shitty cans of pepper spray for people, bear mace can shoot 25-35 feet, and the cloud can carry even further! No need to even get close to an attacker. Blocking a doorway? A hallway? A stairwell? Shoot around a corner, or into the area. They'll clear out even if it doesn't hit them.

It's also technically not as bad to be carrying as a knife or firearm (in my state at least, there's no laws against it). If ever questioned I just say I'm an avid hiker (true) and I use the same backpack (also true).

Truthfully I also carry a pair of HUUUGE guns everywhere I go, but I know how to use them, and not all of us can be so blessed. Go for the bear mace if you think you need it and won't get in trouble for having it. It's very calming to the nerves to know you have it there if you need it, although you most likely won't.

Thank you thats the advice I needed. Oh and I never do plan on bringing a gun or knife because I would most likely just end up accidently hurting myself with it.

Hijack a shopping cart, knock one of its wheels off, don't shower for two weeks, roll in dirt with old clothes, fill your new ride with broken appliances and bottles and ask everyone you see for change. People will leave you alone, trust me.

how about quitting your job, begging for money on the street, and living from site to site that you 'explore'.

If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

And that is definitely the enthusiasm you need to move up from amateur explorer like we are ere to the professional level. I've yet to make it to "the show" and am stuck down here in the minors.
