Its all over the news right now. This is horrible. The freight train just passed through the tunnel 26 which Snordhol explored here http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=55407 before it smashed into the Metrolink with 100+ people riding at the time.

Please keep us informed. Would be great to see a news clip online about this.

Boy, that sucks about the wreck. Betcha that some idiot screwed up the signal block, either at Ohmaha Control, or just a random guy with malicious intent. But I can't imagine that Ohmaha Control screwed this up. It'd have to be bad relay info by the commuter train or malicious intent by an unknown party.

Please be careful everyone.

The pictures on the news looks pretty bad. So far they say 3 people dead and dozens hurt.

Edit- Could be terrorism. Just throwing it out there.

Unknown if this is the cause, but here's some info on UP Omaha's Dispatching Services:

New Union Pacific Computerized Train Dispatching System

OMAHA, Neb., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- A "quantum" leap in train dispatching
technology was authorized today by the Board of Directors of Union Pacific
Corporation (NYSE: UNP).

"We plan a complete replacement and upgrading of our Computer Aided
Dispatching (CAD) system, the backbone of our Harriman Dispatching Center in
Omaha," said Union Pacific Railroad President, Jerry Davis.

The upgrade will allow UP to increase its rail network velocity, improve
car cycle times and save fuel, among other benefits. Development and
installation of the system will be completed in 2000.

The new CAD III system will integrate mainline and terminal planning in
order to improve utilization of locomotives, cars, terminals and crews. Davis
said the new system will also improve safety by assisting train dispatchers in
making fail-safe decisions on train movements.

In describing the CAD III system as a quantum leap in technology, Davis
compared it to the advances made in train dispatching, beginning with the
1860s "highball" signal system to the 1930s Centralized Traffic Control (CTC),
which allowed remote control of track signals and switches, to the first
generation of computer aided dispatching in the 1980s.

The Harriman Dispatching Center was opened in April, 1989, centralizing
all of UP's dispatching operations into a single location for the first time.
The Southern Pacific dispatching office will be moved to the Harriman Center
by November. UP acquired SP in 1996.

Union Pacific averages more than 2,000 train starts every day over 36,000
miles of track in the western two thirds of the United States.

Yes, freight train vs. passenger train.

I've been PM'ing with another member on here about this issue, and thought I'd share some of the info with you:

Post by RailGuy88

"...which is why I'm leaning towards the commuter service being at fault with communications. But I do still suspect that the new "CAD III" that UP had implemented last year may be at fault too. Although the "CAD III" system is fully operational and has very few (if any) errors in the system, it's always monitored by humans in the dispatch center.

If you tune a radio scanner to UP's dispatch frequency (anywhere in the US), you'll hear that some parts of the traffic are voice-controlled via the CAD III, and others are still controlled via human interaction.

Many UP engines today are controlled via radio-link. This means that a person in Omaha Dispatch is pretty much operating the trains like a model railroad or R/C control car. There's no engineer present in any of the UP cabs to operate the engine. Maybe only a small majority of the yards across the US still have humans in the cab (or ride-alongs to switch the manual tracks), but rarely will you see a human at the controls of a UP engine..."

I just wanted to point out that UP uses remote control for a large portion of their operations here in the city. Chatsworth is very populated, but there arent many crossings over where the wreck happened, so there was probably an operator aboard the engine as well. My thoughts go out to the UP personnel as well, those guys LOVE their jobs. Lets hope they jumped off and ran.

Anymore info on the second crash? A link, maybe, for those of us in deepest darkest Canada?

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Second crash sounds like an automobile and train collision.

If this is the case, a very, very common occurrence all over North America. Happens daily... likely only making the news now because of the first Metrolink story.

This article says that at least 18 people or more have been found dead. Not surprising with head-on collision. Why they had two trains on the same track I don't know.
