Asbestos is new and Good. (1926)

In going through a box of research papers I have gleaned, I found on the very bottom tonight an article from 1926 that is kind of mind-blowing in it's Hurray For Asbestos attitude.

I may truncate it, as it's not in good enough shape to photograph....so I have to type it, but until noted otherwise, the following is an article from the Bing. Press. July 28th 1926.
Oh...it should be noted that this article appears on a page full of home-building articles...but is presented as "news". That is to say,...I have seen this sort of Clump of articles in the old papers many times, and I mean to insinuate that there was almost surely PAYMENT for this sort of boosterism even though it appears in the paper as a regular article.

JULY 28th 1926:
Headline:
"ASBESTOS SHINGLES INSURE LASTING ROOF"

The growing demand for better roofs, roofs which will be permanent, fireproof and require practically no repairing for the life of the house has resulted in the appointment of C.W. Hull & Son, representative of Johns-Manville INC, manufacturers of asbestos shingles.

(NOTE: That is the entire first paragraph even if it doesn't conclude itself).

The demand in this section of the country has rapidly increased in the past tow or three years so that the appointment of a local distributor and dealer was necessary to give house owners an opportunity to purchase asbestos shingle roofs, such as have now been in use for many years in other localities over the United States.

"The asbestos shingle" says C,W, HULL, "is a remarkable invention. It never requires painting and should never need attention of any sort after it is once placed in position on a roof. A burning brand alighting upon the roof cannot set the house on fire under any circumstances. Rain, snow, hail, heat and cold do not affect the asbestos shingle rather the effect of the weather is actually to strengthen it."

TRUNCATE:...sorry...I can't keep squinting at this tiny print and doing this tonight.

This serves PLENTY on the OUTLOOK of asbestos in 1926. I will try to hack the rest of the article in here over the weekend. This is coming from very blurry microfilm. My eyes are failing me,...possibly due to seven stages of contributing not just without respect, but, with hate even. (HUH?...well then it aint your business. Just telling someone else how very very much they suck and are like a stuck up robot.)
But the rest of the article continues in the YAY-Asbestos vein,,,and is worth it, and I will bring it forth as soon as I can,,,but I can hardly see right now.

There are only so many more times in life that I, or any of us, will Grimace on a toilet. My eyes, it feels like they are being stapled shut. But I will slosh out a little more...but now that I have broken the article,,,,I feel it best to do all caps for the remaining bits...as I wont be able to finish it tonight,..and by the time I can..it could be confusing.....I mean ALL CAPS for the stuff that comes from the article only.

ARTICLE CONTINUED:

"THIS IS BECAUSE THE SHINGLE IS MADE EXCLUSIVELY OF MINERAL MATERIAL WHICH GROWS HARDER AND MORE DURABLE WITH THE PASSAGE OF YEARS.

"ASBESTOS SHINGLES ARE MADE OF ASBESTOS FIBER, ITSELF A MINERAL WHICH IS ALMOST INDESTRUCTABLE, AND PORTLAND CEMENT MOULDED UNDER TREMENDOUS HYDRAULIC PRESSURE.
THE INVENTION OF THE JOHNS-MANVILLE HEXAGONAL ASBESTOS SHINGLE HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO REROOF FOR THE LAST TIME RIGHT OVER THE OLD SHINGLES, A METHOD THAT HAS MANY ADVANTAGES TO THE HOUSE OWNER OVER THE OLD PROCEDURE OF TEARING OFF THE ROOF COVERING IN ORDER TO PUT ON A NEW ONE.

Seriously,...just cant do this right now...there is about the same amount of the article left undone. I know this is boring stuff to some. But it's pretty rare to see it in this flat out of a promo form. I'll fill it in tomorrow or so.

Cigarettes used to be considered good as well. In fact, the first filtered cigarette used an asbestos filter.

Well I'm guess when they sold this stuff, there is always a salesman and advertising involved too. I just wonder how long the gap of time was between when the asbestos manufacturers knew that it was harmful to breath to when that same knowledge was passed on to consumers.

Thing is, not all asbestos is bad for you. Its everywhere. And the way it is used it wont have the chance to hurt most people. But being as sue-happy as America is, anything that could possibly hurt anyone is severely frowned upon, and since there are other "safe" alternatives, banning asbestos was an easy decision.

asbestos was used in things you wouldn't even think of. For instance, in many World War 2 gasmasks they used filters that has asbestos inside. So never use old filters, not even for fun.

Heh, that sounds like my Uncle Frak (who was neither my real uncle nor named Frak) who would insist I not swing too high or I could fall off and hit my head on the metal bars but then made me play "PFT" (penis fun time) back at the house when we were done at the playground.

DAMNIT! I wish I had known that before. I used an old russian gas mask while I was demolishing half of an old mouldy house for my stepfather. Its bad enough I have to deal with this shite at work.

Depends on how old, I doubt you really had a WW2 or earlier Russian gasmask as these are quite rare and expensive when found. You probably used one of the green or brown filter types which do not contain asbestos.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

You know I have seen lots of things that went from great to deadly as history progressed.

Asbestos gloves are in use by people such as the US military (switching hot machine gun barrels. The thing is using it properly, making sure you don't breath it in and its pretty damn safe around humans.

DDT that weakened bird eggs, was and could still be safe is used and disposed of properly. Hell people could coat there arms and mosquito's would eat it instead of biting. Granted I am sure there would be some human side effect from constant exposure. That goes for just about anything. However say we put it in a bug trap in places full of malaria, and dispose of it properly. Doesn't hurt the birds then does it?

Forget the oil, but there was a oil in transformers that was nearly impossible to set on fire. The problem was people in third world countries used it to cook with and it got banned by many places.....

Hell a few decades(20-30) ago people worried about global COOLING, now its global warming.

People love to get excited about a revolutionary new idea, solar power, electric cars etc. People also love to get scared. Fear is a amazing motivator for sales, be it newspaper, or home security systems.

Moderation and common sense application seem to be what people are missing.

Common sense is not as common as it would lead one to believe. I vote to rename it " Uncommon Sense ". I think we can go as far as renaming Common Courtesy too. Lol.

Yup. It's all a bit ridiculous. Our society is pretty fucked up. Roughly one in a million people will ever get mesothelioma. Not exactly the sort of thing that's worthy of the level of hysteria it recieves, is it?

Meanwhile smoking and second-hand smoke is the cause of how many deaths a year? It's why I laugh when I hear about urban explorers who wear their cool-looking p100 respirator masks and then go light up afterwards.

This is called the availability heuristic. If something is memorable, people think it happens more that it does. The classic example is plane crashes. There are very very few plane crashes when you look at the number of planes flights that take place, but people are still afraid of crashing. Mesothelioma is exotic sounding, and foreign, so people are going to be more afraid of it than throat cancer.
