| | | It really is fascinating to look around in there. In one area, there is a lot of paperwork scattered about. I looked through a small amount of it and actually found a letter ordering the decommission of the site. You will not be disappointed if you make it in.

| | | We're planning this excursion six months ahead of time. We've already tracked down the map, and a couple of freely available documents online detailing the site as it was in 1992, as well as an operations manual (600+ pages!) from the 1960's. We've also dug around and found some other freely available documents involving some of the steps necessary to safely enter the facility. It's amazing what one can find at the local thrift shops! And I thought they were only good for old Army coats. Only problem is, I'm a scrawny 20-something year old, and I need to be in the shape I was six years ago. Ever since a horrid car wreck, my health and fitness have taken a slight downward turn. I looked at the historical silo down in Tucson, both in Google Earth and on their website, but I realize that complex is somewhat different. Is that possibly a Titan II installation they've on display there?

| | | Did you check out siloworld.com? Also, you don't need to be in great shape, you just need to be able to squeeze through the entrance. At a few intersections, the flooring is removed, so you have to do a balance beam walk or you'll get your feet wet. Aside from that, it's a simple walking tour.

| | | When did you go last Todd? When I was there, there was really no way down the exhaust silo aside from the rust old re-bar ladder in the wall. I haven't had a chance to test its load-bearing strength. Is that the path of access you used?

I can't answer your question, but are you guys talking about the Live Oak site?

| | | Yes, we are indeed speaking of said complex elrais. It's a while down the road so my squad and I have time to prepare and do a bang up job of it, but I'm definitely going.

| | | I think the last time I went was in 96. I went down the rusty re bar ladder. It was plenty strong. My brother, who weighed around 250lbs, had no problem on the ladder, squeezing through the grate was a bit difficult, but doable. The ladder is solid.

I figured so. If this thing was built to withstand a nuclear blast from 3000' away, it must be solid. If the re-bar won't hold a load, I'd imagine the (newer) hand rails should hold for an auxiliary belay line. We're two strong so far...three is the max just for security's sake.

| | | Todd, when I was there a few years back, my friend and I took a break in the hot summer sun near an old creek near the perimeter. It was still inside the fence line, but he and I saw what looked like an old access shaft near said creek. It looked about as old as the rest of the complex, but was set far off from it, and none of the diagrams/maps/photos I've seen online present such a connection. Did you come across it as well? It's actually my thinking that it was exactly that: An old well.

If it's not up on the plateau with the rest of the base, it's probably not connected. In relation to the exhaust terminal, where is it? The only thing connected to the complex that is outside of the main cluster is the antenna terminal to the south.

| | | If I recall properly, it was at the southeast edge of the fenced in complex, near that standing body of water about 300 meters due east of the antenna silos. Come to think of it, it was made of some sort of brick, not poured concrete, so I believe it is indeed unconnected to the complex.

| | | Could be some kind of structure from the days when the place was a ranch, before the AF took it over, or perhaps some temporary structure when the place was built, maybe having to do with dewatering. According to some loose sources on the net, there were no specifications for concrete block or brick in the construction documents. It was all poured concrete and corrugated steel for the major structures. I won't say I'm 100% positive.

| | | Many/most had some sort of water well/pumphouse "annex" located within the compound, or sometimes a mile or two away. I don't think they were designed to be survivable, so their construction technique & material might have been a lot different than the mission-essential structures.

| | | Hey, does anybody know the actual plot number or mailing address of this facility? I'm playing with the local county GIS this evening and was just curious as to what information I could garnish from it.

| | | NoBonus, I appreciate the link, but I'm actually going to the facility in Live Oak, not Chico. I think I may be stumped since Sutter County doesn't have a free GIS access online.
