Angel Island

A couple months ago I went on a campout to Angel Island and we explored three buildings on the island. As you can see in the first photo, you have to climb up some broken stairs to get in one of the buildings. The other building which was probably the coolest I only got a picture of the kitchen area and a warning sign. And the big building we only got into some kind of basement thing; has anybody ever gotten into the upper levels of it?

The first building you got into at the Fort McDowell area of Angle Island was an old barracks used for a few years in the 1940s, then some of it housed the troops assigned to the island's Nike missile battery & IFC in the 1950s & briefly into the 1960s before it was abandoned. Stairways were destroyed by State Parks in an incredibly stupid fashion back in the 1970s (before they gave a damn about history, though whether they do now is debatable) to prevent people from hitting the upper floors.

The other two buildings it looks like you got into were the '1000 man barracks,' used for just a couple years during WW-II & then abandoned, and then the Mess Hall, which could seat about 1000 people at a time & had a top floor ballroom/basketball courts/movie theater.

I've been all through both, the Mess Hall in particular being utterly amazing, but also somewhat dangerous due to the decay.

State Parks doesn't have the $$$ to try to fix/preserve the structures except the Immigration Station, which is a very politically-correct thing to dump millions of dollars into because of all the Asians living in the Bay Area (& Asians as well as businesses wanting to make Asians happy have donated lots of $$$ for its restoration).

Yes, there was a Nike site (meaning two facilities) on Angel Island. It was known as SF-91.

The launch battery is easy to get on top of, but there's not too much to see. The underground magazines are (or at least should be) secured, but they're very stripped inside anyway.

Arming/fueling area is nearby, but on off-limits Dept. of Homeland Security (ooh, how scary! It's actually just USCG) land.

The IFC (radar/control site) was atop the main hill on the island, known at Mt. Caroline Livermore. Everything but the guard shack & the flat concrete pads the RADAR antennas & control vans were on have been removed, with the site re-graded. Even the road that led up to it is gone. It's a wee bit of a trudge to get up there, but a great view of the Bay Area & some picnic tables up there to eat lunch on.

One very unique topographic feature is that they had to cut three notches in the hillside so that the missile tracking radars at the IFC could 'see' the Nike-Ajax missiles on their launchers down at the launch battery.

In a recent 'previous life,' myself & a few like-minded individuals volunteering for CA State Parks worked to clean up the launch battery area --above & below ground-- with the hopes that it could eventually be turned into an interpretive site. The Park seemed interested, but no progress happened on their part, so we (or I will just speak for myself & say I) decided to stop wasting my time.

Why spend a lot of time trying to restore it when there's already a beautifully restored Nike site only about 6 miles away at Fort Barry? Because the Nike site on Angel Island was never upgraded to the Nike-Hercules (nuclear warhead) system, whereas SF-88 was, so there are some appreciable differences between the two, and my little social-circle does have some connections to get Nike stuff for display.

I don't understand the specifics, but if I recall right, Angel Island is actually federal gov't property, but it's under the control & management of California State Parks.

Anyone who is interested in history should wish that the federal gov't would take the island back, and operate is as part of the GGNRA. Some of the problem is simply budgetary, but there's also some ignorance/apathy on Angel Island as well, seeming caused by the management style & policies of AI State Park superintendent Dave Mathews.

Not to give you miscreants any hints or anything, but last I heard, there was even one day in the week that Angel Island didn't even have any sort of LE/security presence!

That's where the warhead assembly & fueling area was, plus the power house. During WW-II, there was an automatic weapon (37 or 40mm anti-aircraft gun) there. It's off-limits now due to the Point Blunt light, as in an an aide to maritime navigation, plus a parks employee lives in the house there.

I was down on the rocks near the ocean when I was in the "off-limits" area, is the fueling area/powerhouse place worth checking out if i go again?

Probably not. The Coasties apparently stop by frequently when they're out on the rigid-hulled inflatables & need to take a potty break, there's the Parks guy that lives there, and then perhaps most importantly, the structures are secured with nothing original inside.

Is the entrance to the inside of the missile site thru the shack that is located right next to the topside concrete?

I'm pretty sure this is it.

i love angel island! I spent a fair amount of time there when I was a kid exploring and hiking. Most explorers in the Bay Area never realize that one of the best spots is hiding in plain sight.
