Secrets of Erich Honecker's nuclear bunker revealed

The bunker in which East German leaders including Erich Honecker hoped to survive a nuclear war is to open to the public for the first time.

But curious visitors to the long secret underground command centre will have only three months to inspect the site before it is sealed forever.

...

Berlin Bunker Network, a volunteer group, will be leading tours at the bunker from today, with a price of 15 GBP (US$30) per person for a two hour expedition, and 80 GBP (US$160) for hardier souls willing to scrabble for longer through the bunkers tighter passages. Tours will also be available in English.

The group has long worked with Berlin forestry authorities, which have looked after the site since the German military moved out in 1993.

A decade after they took over however, amateur enthusiasts broke though the forestry department's seals to the bunker's access tunnel and it became a favourite haunt for casual explorers, wandering through from its decontamination areas, its barracks, kitchens, and control room.

Thieves moved in too however, stripping much of the equipment from the site and even hauling off valuable copper cables.

Now the BBN has been asked to run a short spell of paying tours, which will finance a plan to close up the bunker once and for all.

"We have already installed a security system and are working on documenting the entire bunker," said BBN's Thomas Bergmann, who said that an virtual tour of the bunker, drawn from 1500 high definition photos, would be made freely available within two years.

"But we can't afford to protect it and we can't let it be destroyed. So we will re-seal it in October."

I was checking that out the other day on Yahoo news. Pretty interesting stuff. If you look at the pictures on Finnish site above, everything is in amazing shape.

Doesn't it seem ironic that funds paid by those who would explore it, and take in its history, will be used to deprive others of doing the same?
