|  | | | i forgot about this place for a long time. ive gotta do some more research on it though. the story as ive heard it that the power company at the time [now aep-pso] was going to build oklahoma's first nuclear power plant in northeast ok. they even built a rail spur to the site, but the project became a NIMBY, and the idea was scrapped. theres still a little bit that remains, like a big lagoon, some old foundations and parking lots, but its a big place. surd and i went on scouting trip last night and ive got some photos ill be uploading them at some point today, once i get a photo hosting account set up. we also plan to go back soon too.

...the wings on my shoes shrank now the moths won't eat my kidneys, when i shake my state capital it only yields 3 fairy napkins, but how do i know my banana slippers are like water boats because when the moon winks it burns my hamster punches, and that's how you get to llama school rowing your canoe backwards up main street when the front bumper falls off, do mermaids get to drink orange juice? |

| | | | i did some research and found out the original name of this place was to be the black fox nuclear power plant.the selected reactors were 2 g.e. boiling water units (i didnt find out the projected megawattage). it was proposed by PSO (Public Service co. of Oklahoma) in 1973, and was to cost 200 million to build (a new plant in today's money would be in the neighborhood of 6 billion or so). as the plant began to go up, so did the leagal problems, and after 9 years construction was stopped, and the 2000 acre site was shuttered. this was the only npp in the country that stopped construction due to leagal opposition once work had already started. the ratepayers still ended up footing the bill, and the plant was replaced by coal-fired units in oolagah, oklahoma. the land today is being leased out as grazing land, and there are no current plans to restart nuclear power in the state.

| | | | yeah thatd be pretty cool if they had finished it. or at least gotten further building it. or at least left what was already built. as a ratepayer i shouldve had a say in all that. but i think were going back tomorrow, so hopefully well get some more shots, if we dont get caught. surd's car sounds like an airshow

Didn't the Washington Public Power Supply System only complete one of their plants, despite starting construction on several? I just remember it being called "whoops" and was part of a huge public bond default.
I haven't looked at the details in a long time, but I seem to remember there being a bunch of similarities between the collapse of the two programs. Tis' a pity. Can't wait to see whatever you find.

you are 100% correct. The WPPS had originally planned a 4 unit station. Only one unit was built. The generator stators and rotors for the other units were built by Westinghouse here in good ol pittsburgh, PA, and I was lucky enough to see them in an old warehouse about 2 years ago. They are literally pristine, sitting there, never used. several dozen million dollars of machinery, a white elephant that the citizens of WA had to pay for, as a result of unfounded paranoia and media hype.... I'll post a few pics of the generators when I get a chance....

That would be great. Cajun and I are planning to go back today and get some more pics and explore the area some more. Last time was a quick scouting trip. So hopefully this weekend or probably monday we'll have somemore pics up.

There were some metal buildings contructed, a few concrete slabs poured, a lagoon dug, and a rail line to the property, but that's all that was done. I'm afraid that they never got that far along in the production for there to be any types of hazards other than the occasional snake or mosquito. There are a few facilities throughout Oklahoma that may have a radioactive hazard though. There are some nuclear fuel processing plants that were shut down years ago. One in Gore, another in Cushing, and south of Crescent. At one time Okalhoma State University had a small nuclear reactor for research purposes, and I think that the University on Okalhoma had one as well.
