Personally, I wouldn't want to stand in the same tunnel as a train.

But it's very much UE. Train tunnels aren't exactly somewhere that everybody gets too see; they definitely aren't meant for the average person to walk in. I'd say they're worth photographing.

Most certainly. We could do with more tunnels, especially train tunnels. Double points if you back-rode the train through em.

Post infrastructure stuff that interests you. Realistically don't let other people define what exploring means for you. No matter how boring you think what you are photographing may be to other people there will almost always be someone who finds it interesting too. For example, a while ago there was a thread on exploring concrete slabs.

thanks for the quick replies
some of the tunnels have nice rockwork and interesting support structures
will try to get some photos up in the near future!
i've ridden through tunnels before and i was usually too busy chocking on the fumes to take photos...
the scary tunnels are the ones that curve, when in the middle some are pitch black.

I'm suprised I didn't see this thread before. Yes, tunnels, trestles, yards, engines and cars, etc. Anything train-related is considered exploration.

What most don't get is that whatever you explore, it's considered UE; no matter if active or abandoned. Just be careful and responsible for how you do it.

I am completely in disagreement with this statement! Trains are boring and have no place in here!

Just jokin, get it done man and just be careful!

Trestles rock!

I wonder what would happen if a train ran across that one now.

Just remember, railroads often have their own police force, especially the major railroads. These police have full legal authority, and penalties are often much higher for crimes committed on railroad land. For a bit more general info, see the Wiki below, but you might also want to consult the laws for your area. http://en.wikipedi...ki/Railroad_police

Just keep your wits about you, and stay sharp. Exploring railroad tunnels will be awesome, but you won't want to get caught. Something tells me that railroad police won't be as forgiving as most private security.

They're pretty dangerous. The clearance on either side is sort of minimal, I'd say no more than 5 feet on either side in any given tunnel, although I'm more than positive most of them have a space that goes into the wall every few yards so that you can either climb out or at least not get sucked under the train as it passes. I've been through a handful of tunnels (train-hopping) but usually once you're more than 1/4 of a way through you can't see much of anything although there are some tunnels with lights every few hundred feet. They're actually pretty spooking and it's easy to get choked up pretty nastily on the fumes from the front of the train. These days I think alot of them have cameras/motion detectors.

Be safe.

hrm... I had this idea some days ago.. exploring the subway tunnel system here in the city... would be pretty awesome.

the only things holding me back are:

- no camera
- nobody to go with me
- police/security shooting at me because they think I'm a terrorist trying to blow shit up.

Well, not having a camera shouldn't stop you. Maybe it's even a good idea to leave cameras behind, at least the first time through. The other two points are quite valid, though. Also, you could be killed by a train. Don't let that stop you though, just contemplate an approach that considers such eventualities.

John Goodman was killed by a train in Now and Again, and they put his brain into an artificial superhuman. Now that's what I call contingency planning.

if you're going into a train tunnel, something to keep in mind is how much the cars actually rock back and forth. You want to make damn sure there is enough space between you and that fucker.

there's plenty of space, I'm pretty sure. besides, there's (mostly) 2 tracks next to each other (one for each direction). chances of 2 metros meeting each other? very small. (I have yet to see it happen, but you never know of course).

I can travel with public transport pretty much for free, though, so I might take a few rides back and forth to get a general idea on how it is :_)

Happens all the time (4x or 5x per trip into dc), the only question is will you be there at that time?
