| | | Back with a bang < on 7/14/2008 8:28 AM >
| | | I really didn't disappear from this site or anything, but for the last two weeks I've been without a working camera. It really messed with my mind, particularly my memory, and I know I couldn't survive much longer without having a camera. Repairs ended up costing only $70, so I got my camera back on Saturday. There was a lot of catching up to do. 1. This was the first picture I took.
2. The repair shop is next to a train yard, so while I waited for my wife I took a couple pictures of the trains.
3. It was raining pretty hard, and if I got too close to the window my camera would get soaked.
4. This is where the repair shop is, in a fairly large electronics market.
Fortunately, Sunday was a clear day so I took my scooter out and revisited a few sites. 5. This place was in a neighbourhood that used to be an important Catholic site in Korea.
6.
7. I returned to Double Dragon Street (you might remember it from the "Blondes Have More Fun" thread) to see how demolition was coming along.
8. That church is officially on my deathwatch list. It's only a matter of time.
9.
10.
11. I decided to make a tactical retreat when I saw someone on another roof.
12. Spot the toilet.
13. A couple of units in these places weren't abandoned. The nearest one really reminds me of my own apartment.
14. I got up on a rooftop to take pictures of this neighbourhood, which will probably be entirely gone in a few years.
15. Yeah, uh, magnificent.
16. The demolished part used to have a karaoke bar and a urology clinic.
Getting down from the rooftop, I nearly fell into a dangerous trap. I unlocked the stairwell door on the 19th floor and went all the way down, but I found that all the doors were locked. Fortunately the first floor was open, or I would've had to go all the way up again. 17. And one final picture of my cat, who loves urbexing windowsills.

| | | A miniature train set The photos are depressing. Unique, dense neighborhoods are being replaced with bland, uninspiring towers.

| | | Those towers are really depressing. Do they all say Samsung on the side? And if so, why? Thanks for sharing, and cute kitty!

Samsung is just the company that built those ones. Maybe wherever you are you know them only as an electronics company, but over here they're called a "chaebol," which is a sort of feudal mega-corporation that has interests in all industries in the nation. The second and third largest chaebols are Hyundai and LG. Usually these buildings have awful names, the weirdest being simply "We've."
In this area where I was, there's also a big project called "Brownstone" (written in large black Korean letters in the picture below). Not surprisingly, they're just more stark white concrete towers (not brown and not stone).
Oh yeah, here's another pathetic name I found: "Honorsville."

Nah, done in photoshop. Although the heavy rain added to the effect. [last edit 7/14/2008 3:14 PM by Steed - edited 1 times]

I'm not sure how the zaibatsu work in Japan, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had Sony buildings. It's probably more likely you'd find Mitsubishi apartments though.

Yeah, it's some of their "work and play" sweatshops. They're trying a more friendly approach than Nike or Disney. EDIT: spelling [last edit 7/15/2008 4:04 PM by tholcomb - edited 1 times]
