New to UER

Hi guys, posted a similar thread in another area about linking photos. Someone suggested the use of flickr and just import the link to the posts....

Isn't anyone afraid of someone stealing your precious images? I just read on popphoto this guys is sueing for like 65K because one of his photos was taken an used on over 30 + generic travel sites etc.

I work hard for my images and do not want anyone taking them without my permission....

Just looking for other ways to share without sharing... lol

How do you guys handle that!?

if you want to be 100 % sure your images don't get stolen - then simply don't share / publish on the internet.

Martino.. I have been scoping UER out for quite some time. In all honesty - the images you've posted here are fantastic. Maybe I find your comment a little more sarcastic then it's meant to be, but hey - who's to tell. Outside the obvious of not posting your images so they can't be stolen, I was just curious to see if anyone else cared or valued their images like me. Of course you do, but what do you do about it... There's no reason anyone should scoff at the fact that I want to protect my work... it's my art. I WANT to post my images here. I want people's opinions on what I've taken and want to be part of this community as I do not know anyone else that's into UE that I can go "explore" with. This is a passion that is not shared by any of my friends or family. - Maybe a warmer welcome, and an answer to the question at hand?

I'm not expecting anyone here to take my work and call it their own... it's everyone else.

He's right. ANYTHING you put on the internet, including your words, can be taken and used by another. There are some steps you can take to make them safer, such as putting a watermark on them and associating a disclaimer that requests people contact you if they are interested in using your images. These however, almost illusionary in how much they actually protect you, and won't stop a determined individual.

WTF indeed.

What he was saying is...

If you put anything on the internet, it will be stolen. There s nothing that can be done to prevent this. He is not laughing at you for wanting to protect your work. He is simply saying that the only way to keep your pictures safe, is to not share them at all. It is truth. He was not being sarcastic, he was just being honest.

I have had my pictures stolen before, it sucks. But it is the price to pay if you want others to see your work. The internet is the wild west of communication. Anything goes. Just keep that in mind when you post pictures.

Megan,

I see what you're trying to do. I checked out that URL: you're trying to link to on your original site and that's going to be pretty difficult to do. I see on your site you're using some king of java script thing to display the pictures instead of displaying them via a normal HTML link.

UER needs to have a link to an actual image file for it to be able to post in here. That java you have on your site will be tough to work with.

Also, I see how you have the thing on your site so you can't right click on the picture on your site or anything. I respect your desire to protect your work, but that thing on your site can also be bypassed by a determined individual. It's just like the music/movie industry and their experimenting with digital rights management, if you can see/view the media, there is always a way to get a copy of it if someone really really wants to.

As Dong clarified, the only thing you can be 100% sure about is not posting them on the internet. Or you can put a ugly watermark over the entire image.

Unfortunately you'd have to hack past your own protection here to post an image, or alternately post these pics in another location where they are fully accessible.

Well I guess I can give a really determined individual a bit more respect then the average rightclick/paste individual...

Neither should get any but I guess if someone likes my image that much - to get all hacker nerd on me, then I'll take it as a compliment.

I generally do tend to look at things more optimistically.

Your pics are really nice.

I have a flickr account that I use just for Exploration Photography. You may want to look into that.

Also, welcome to UER!

precisely what David said!

Sorry Megan! It wasn't my intention too make fun of you in any way (or your work for that matter). It's just that i've had this talk with so many people lately. Mainly they all want to talk me into using huge watermarks all over my photos to 'protect' 'm - and i just think that's nuts!! my conclusion: if you want to be sure your work is not stolen - don't put it on the internet!

i should've explained myself a bit more! sorry

Thanks Calvin - they are more random then anything. I haven't done much UE because it's just me. Frankly I'm intimidated by abandoned places, which is why I'm so fascinated. But no one to go with, and I certainly won't go by myself. The few that I have were with two friends and only because it took a half hour to talk them into it - (told them I would pay for lunch!) Otherwise, I just sit back and wide eye the photos that are here.

I've been to plenty in the past (in my younger days) with friends that have come and gone, but at that time it was for the adventure and I hadn't discovered the love of photography yet.

I've been trying to find local groups without success.

No one to explore with?
That needs to change.
You live in a great spot to explore and take pictures, and I bet if you look around you may just find some new friends to explore with.

Try looking here:
http://www.uer.ca/...sp?fid=1&catid=209

Hop in there, introduce yourself and post some pics and some exploring stories. Give it some time and you'll be out there again, having fun instead of armchair exploring.

Know what I mean?

Northeast is not known to be the most friendly forum... occasionally if I need someone last minute I MIGHT get a reply... But just be careful, people like to also give newbies misleading info sometimes. A lot of people may think you are fishing for locations.

Megan,

You could display your photos as background images in an html table rather than as actual images. This would prevent right clicking and saving. You could then disable the screen capture ability. So far so good?

You could even display the images through Java, ensuring there is NOTHING to right-click or link to.

But in the end no matter what method you use, programs such as Paint Shop Pro have capture features that will capture ANYTHING on the screen.

A large watermark seems to be the only sure way to avoid your images being taken against your wishes.

Or just avoid to put them full res.
After all, what is the problem with someone having a shitty 600 pixel size picture of yours (or mine for that matter) Won't be able to do much with it, as far as using them for printing/advertising etc... It will allow for a collector to have them, go through them, and... well... that's about it really.
And then, no need for all that hassle.
Personally I do right click save pictures (honestly who doesn't) usually it will be to show it to a friend, or just for a reference later kind of a learning by observing.
What's the arm in that?
And yeah, I did had some of my work stolen and displayed on other site... I guess I take it as a compliment... What else can you do really. Too much work for nothing.

i agree, i find this the only way to insure that even if my work does get stolen (and I know how that goes...but another time...another thread for that story) I know that the only thing they can do with it is put it up on the internets.

Also, megan, i see what you've done with your images on your site, and you have some really cool stuff, but every time I click on an image to see it and see 'PROOF' written across the image it makes me want to kill another cat...and trust me I'm running out of Chinese restaurants that want my dead cats...

Agreed. Nothing can be done anyway from the size of your pictures. I tend to not even look at the pictures with big watermark like this. It destroy the aesthetic of it... I am sure I miss out much, but, I really can't stand it...
