Drac's Castle, Courtenay, BC

Hi everybody, I'm new on the UE forum. I put in a search recently for "Drac's Castle" and that's how I found this site. I've noticed that there have been a few posts about Drac's and some talk about it, but no one seems to know much about the place.

Drac's Castle looms in a small town on Vancouver Island called Courtenay. I lived in Courtenay from the time I was 8 yrs old until I was 22 when I moved to Alberta, but I can still remember Drac's as though it was yesterday. In fact, I lived on Marsden Road most of my young life, which is only about a 5-10 minute drive from Drac's, so about a 1/2 hour walk (for us kids). Drac's isn't just one building, it's several old, cracked and broken down buildings, some full of bullet holes in the roofs, some full of water, some with underground tunnels... complete with animal bones and odd artifacts (hatchets, knives, skulls) scattered around the whole area. These buildings are tucked into the trees just off the main logging road (look to your left as you're heading out towards the coal pits, just past the new logging road overpass).

These days, I'm not exactly sure what remains of Drac's as I don't live there anymore, but the last time I was in Courtenay in 2006, it looked as though there were only a few of the old buildings left standing. Most of the bigger ones were removed and the underground tunnels filled in because they were "eye sores" for passers-by on the new overpass. Such a shame I know, to tear down something so historic, but maybe they had more in mind by tearing them down than just the "eye sore" factor. If you are from Courtenay, you should know about Drac's. If you were ever brave enough to go to Drac's, then you'll know what I mean about the powers-that-be having more on their minds. It was a scary place, to say the least. Maybe it was a good thing for them to tear most of the buildings down.

There was one building in particular that had underground tunnels that I thought would be pretty cool to check out when I was a kid, with a few friends of course. I don't know what came over us to go down there, but all I can really remember (as I was only about 8-10 yrs old at the time) was that it was pitch black so we had to use a flash light, it smelled rank, it was cold both in a physical and a paranormal way, there was noises coming from all angles as you walked through the narrow corridors even though there was supposed to be nothing down there, writings all over the wall, bones from animals on the ground, along with lots of other stuff I wasn't brave enough to touch or pick up, and a general sense of death and devil-worship and doom. We didn't stay down there long because it was pretty dangerous... there were open pits in the floor which if you didn't have a flashlight you would have fallen right into. We were so young and stupid, I'm surprised we made it outta there alive. It was the scariest thing I've ever done in my life (to date), and I'll never, EVER go back down there again... not that the tunnels are even there anymore, but if they were, you'd never see THIS girl in them!

When I went back in '06, it was just before I was leaving that I told my sister I HAD to see Drac's... I had to see what was left and get some pictures so I could show my boyfriend when I got home, because he had heard all about this creepy place but couldn't picture it without being there to see it. So I figured I'd take a few last shots from what was left on my camera so I could show him, not thinking I would capture anything in those 3 shots. Other than the creepy factor, these pics are some of the prettiest I've ever seen or taken.

There is one picture in particular that gets to me the most. We almost drove by it when we were trying to find it (so overgrown and the main buildings being torn down now... it was hard to see as we drove by). I jumped out of the truck when I saw it, and ran across the road, snapped 3 quick shots, jumped back in the truck and we were outta there. Still, to this day, we were all pretty scared even being NEAR Drac's, we had to get outta there as quick as we could. There has been so much death, torture and devil-worship associated with that place, that everybody I know that knows of Drac's is scared of it.

Anyways, the one picture that I like the most I've shown to people that could see the same things as I saw, people from out in Edmonton that had no prior knowledge of Drac's. There are 2 things that I can see in the one picture, but I am going to let you be the judge of what you can/can't see. I tried attaching the 3 pictures to this thread, but it says all 3 pics are too big to attach! If somebody can tell me how to make my pictures smaller so I can post them, please do. Otherwise, if you want to see my pictures, just email me and I'll email them to you privately. I welcome your comments/questions, so feel free to email me or post to this thread.

Welcome to UER! I'm sure you'll like it here.

To post the pictures, go to photobucket, upload the pics, then select the bar with IMG tags and copy that into the post box

Alternately, you could resize them in paint/photoshop, but that will reduce quality

If you'd like, just eMail them to [email protected] and I'll figure it out for you

I'd really like to see these pics; it sounds like a cool place but I'd never heard of it before

And about the "writings all over the wall", was it like silly teenage wicca graffiti or more professional/serious?

Sorry everybody it took me so long to get back on here, I don't have a computer at home yet, only at work and I've been just swamped lately! But anyways, I hope you enjoy the pics!

I'd love to hear what people see in these pics... like I said I've asked people that had no idea about this place and they could see what I was seeing too, and considering Drac's reputation, it's creepy as hell!

The writings on the wall, from what I remember (I was only 8 or 10 yrs old so what I can remember is kinda foggy) seem to me now to be more teenager stuff, but still creepy and doesn't leave a good feeling in your gut. There were others too that I can't remember what the inscriptions say, that were pretty evil.

I can sort of see a skull on the left building. And the lighting is really weird.

If Abercrombie suddenly decided that breathing wasn't cool, Half of American teens would have died within the past 24 hours.

Well, it is a Canadian domain name, so I assume the site started in Canada.

I've marked on Pic #3 what I saw when I first looked at it. Inside the red box is what looks to me like a face (more like a skull) looking downwards towards what's inside the green box below it, it's mouth open wide... looks like it's screaming, and it looks like it's got a dark cloak on beneath it.

Inside the green box is what appears to be three distinct faces (they almost look child-like) looking off towards what is our left. It is these faces that the larger figure above seems to be screaming and looking at.

Creeped me RIGHT out when I saw this picture for the first time, and every time I look at it, it seems to get more and more clearer. I can't be the ONLY one who can see this stuff, can I???

I see it too, but I don't think it's paranormal. Sometimes when there is poor or contrasting light, it can distort the image and create strange patterns that could be seen as faces, ghosts, or monsters. This optical illusion is called matrixing.

This is highlighting what I saw, IMO much more obvious. The red circle is highlighting a very big, kind of long and stretched out skull figure on the left building. You can only see down to its nose. The blue circle has what looks like some sort of dog's face in it.

I honestly cannot for the life of me see this screaming skull on the right building. Whatever, I doubt any of this is paranormal, considering the lighting so so sketchy on the picture.

Yah very true... it creeped ME out in particular when I first saw that picture because of what I know about the place, and I am still scared of that place, to this day. All the "odd" things we might see in these pictures is probably just the lighting.

I still think the shots are really neat, the way the light is hitting the bushes and the darkness of the buildings looming over you... I just love 'em!
