Location Questions.

There is a recently abandoned and boarded up gas station/mechanic place near here.

There is also an abandoned Harveys[spelling?] downtown. It has butcher paper on the windows so you can't see in. It has the Harveys sign off, and you can see the outline of it.

Are these places ok to go into? Seeing as they are retail, and I read once on this forum that retail doesn't stay abandoned long.

Sorry about the question. I just don't know what types of locations are safer to explore.

The main reasons retail spaces are not ideal UE sites is that they just don't tend to be very interesting. In a well-secured area, they tend to be just big, empty, clean modern rooms. If they are not so well secured, they might have been trashed and tagged to hell, if you are lucky. But generally speaking, retail spaces *are* well secured, since the owner generally hopes to make more money off the space in the future by renting it out again or selling it. Unless one of these places happens to be extremely simple and safe to get into, I wouldn't bother.

I know finding interesting places in your area can be difficult. But going into one of these retail spaces would be like doing an ugly chick because you can't wait to lose your virginity. Do a little more looking around, and try to find an abandoned factory, hospital, etc. Even houses are better than retail spaces. If you look around on these forums and on the internet, you can find tons of tips and tricks for ways of finding new places to explore.

I'll finish by saying that I HAVE explored some moderately interesting retail spaces. Sure, they weren't the greatest, but they were worth exploring. But the places that I'm thinking of were very easy to get into, and very low risk. The main features of these areas were just graffiti, litter and urban decay. Nothing that exciting, but it beats taking photos in my back yard!

Those sound like perfect locations for a beginner. Would you rather start out with something dangerous like an army base or a steam tunnel (apologies if you aren't really a beginner)?

Anyway, what are you waiting for before you go in? Someone to put up a sign saying "Location closed for one month. Trespassers welcome"? Or for people on here to approve of the location we've never seen? Just go in. The worst thing that'll happen is you'll get a lesson in talking your way out of trouble.

Analysis paralysis. Don't think too hard, just do it..the caveat being you're the only one who can assess the risk...Good luck

Before I answer your question I have a few of my own for you:

Is this an Infiltration, or are you exploring abandonment?

http://www.uer.ca/...id=1&threadid=4636

http://www.uer.ca/...id=1&threadid=5661

I can’t tell where you are from. What are the trespassing laws/fines in your region? Have you yourself researched this?

Have you figured out your entry method yet? What information have you gathered when you scouted out this location? What is the activity like? Have you sat and watched this place for a while? Have you looked at the site from every side? What’s next door, what’s behind it? Who goes in? Who goes out? How often?

What do you think is in there? Whatever it is is it worth it? Why are you picking this site/location?

Listen to DJ Craig. The ugly chick analogy seems to really be ringing true here.

Go where you shouldn’t go –just go smart. (Don’t get caught or killed for being a stupid ass. Think this shit out, have a plan -have two plans.)

Blaze your own trails. (Trust yourself and your gut, have some confidence)

Live to explore another day. (Is this site worth it?)

Here's the thing...if you get "shunned" by one or two people on this site, it doesn't really matter much. And the majority of the members of this forum don't have a problem with less experienced people asking questions of more experienced people. And if it really matters to you that you've been "shunned" by a few people...change your avatar and no one will ever recognize you. Don't give in to peer pressure. Especially not the digital kind. That's just nerdy.
