Expo 2000 buildings

The first stop that we made on our way to Berlin / Leipzig was at the former world fair in Hannover; expo 2000.

Not all buildings are abandoned; some are in use as offices. But the Dutch building and the Lithuanian building are left to decay.

1 The Dutch Burger

This 40 meter high, 7 story building was designed by MVRDV architects in 1997. Each floor represented its own Dutch landscape.

7th floor – a Dutch dyke was created here, they even put up some windmills.
6th floor – a cinema.
5th floor – an oak forest
4th floor – a floor with giant containers that gave the impression that the trees at the floor above where growing from these.
3rd floor – a garden, representing the Dutch flower industry.
2nd floor – dunes (which now looks more like a cave environment).
1st floor – actually this is the basement where a café was set up (closed)

Visitors would go up in the elevator to the top of the building and then go down floor by floor using the staircases on the outside of the building.

2 Lithuania building

It was the first time Lithuania presented itself at a world fair. It’s a relatively small building, but an eye catcher non-the-less for its bright yellow color.

It has always amazed me that we as a people will erect massive buildings for such short periods of use and simply leave them. But it also excites me, I love these. The forest floor is such an interesting space and your capture has a lot going on in it. Also, in the full set, the dunes are very interesting. Nice, thank you for sharing!

wow, your black & white shots always floor me, but your colour shots are equally as dynamic. explorations with you and bartje are a match made in heaven, as you're two of my favourite photographers on this website.

you're right we're a good match - but we decided that mostly on our drinking skills! hehehe but seriously: we had a great time.

Funny story: In the hotel we where we got offered a room and people asked us quite a few times if we were sure about it. Sure we're sure! Then we saw the saw the room and we understood they didn't have a double room anymore and they offered us a single one. talking about a match eh? By then we knew why everybody was looking at us a bit weird. We took a single room each and we still don't know why they offered us one single room.

The structure doesn't look very old. Bad business plan from the get-go maybe? I have seen other Expo sites and the buildings have for the large part been reused for other things. The privately owned buildings from the Expo's housed the business and the publice ones were used by the city in some fashion, ect.

Most of the buildings are re-used...except for these two. There are expo sites that are abandoned. Like the one in Sevilla, Spain.

From the start it was known that after expo 2000 the dutch burger was to be demolished. I don't know why they never did demolish it.

Thanks Nutekk!

i love the photos with the green! especially the flowers. =)

the area beneath the building is amazing. it looks otherwordly.

in a way it's such a shame that these odd buildings are just left to sit and rot... but i imagine they're fun to explore. lovely photos!

these are absolutely amazing. i would love to see a place like this. i...i...i don't even know what to say. Awesome.

And then, it asks the question: in a cold, uncaring, ruthless world of corporate slavery and assembly-line experiences . . . how is it possible to still live a life with strength, and passion, and with a soul that is still truly alive?

Your shots are absolutely beautiful. Specifically #5&8; the colors and mood are gorgeous, and very retro/sci-fi-looking! hehe
