Why Lock a Thread?

Serious question, not trying to be a jerk or question the mods. Just wondering why some threads get locked, like my "Why do people get banned" thread?

Was it crossing some kind of line? I didn't see anybody acting out of place on that thread or being mean to each other. Didn't seem like flame war material either.

Are some questions just forbidden or something?

Well, there comes a point where a thread answers the OP's question. Once the topic has been fully hashed out, it can be locked. This way we don't have threads with 25 pages with everyone basically repeating the same thing over and over again.

also, sometimes a thread gets so off topic that there is no saving it. Around here threads are locked with good reason 99.999% of the time.

The question wasn't out of bounds, but the thread had run it's course and was starting to become another useless thread, so it got locked. Threads generally get locked because they get off topic... On that note:
