| | Abandoned industrial shop in Okmulgee < on 6/24/2008 3:02 PM >
| | | Passed through Okmulgee, OK the other day on a whim, and found this place on the edge of town. It is on one large lot with two main buildings. One building is intact, but decrepit, the other is down to walls and girders.

| | | Okmulgee has always been so tempting, but I never have any time -- always either almost to Tulsa (gotta get there before I fall asleep), or need to get to Dallas (omg we left late again, hurry hurry). Never time to stop. Thanks for the pix! By the way, did you stop at any of the "casinos" around Okmulgee? I did once, and that's enough for me. I could feel the hope being sucked out of me when I opened the door. Row upon row of video slot machines, each with a seat in front of it, and even in the middle of the night there were a couple dozen poor bastards plugging quarters into them, hoping for the next jackpot. And there weren't any games of skill -- not even video poker -- just 8-liners of every description. I can't think of a more miserable existence than sitting in front of an 8-liner for hours on end, pretending that basic mathematic reality is wrong, just for me, just this time.
J'ai toujours fait une prière à Dieu, qui est fort courte. La voici: "Mon Dieu, rendez nos ennemis bien ridicules!" Dieu m'a exaucé. |

| | | If you get a chance, check it out. There is a huge brick industrial building there next to the tracks I have been dying to get inside of since I've seen it. There are some other buildings around that look promising as well. Maybe some others have been there and will give us the scoop. So, I am going to go back in the winter, when the poison ivy and snakes are gone and I won't suffocate in some heavy clothing. I refuse to gamble in Oklahoma casinos. It's more of a political issue with me, however, since I think it is complete B.S. that Native Americans can open a casino but no one else can. But there are some more practical reasons for not going as well. As you said, the atmosphere of despair is overwhelming. I don't want to pay money to be depressed. In Lawton, where I live, the casinos are chock full of people shoving their money into the slots. The games of "skill" aren't much better. The blackjack betting limit is so low that you can't outrun a losing streak by big bets, and they charge you a quarter every hand you play, so if you see forty hands, you just pissed off ten bucks. When the betting is capped at a hundred, it pretty much ruins any mathematical chance you have of breaking even. Poker is raked heavily, but I haven't compared that rake to the rakes in Vegas or Mississippi. Also, I despise the people who show up, think they know everything because the watch the World Series of Poker, constantly talk shit and act like they are on TV for some big stakes. The 2-5 games get big occasionally, but the economy has hurt the games big time. The 1-2 stuff is rock tight, and it gets hard to make money there. At the end of the day, my work is stressful enough, and I don't have the patience for it. Wow, that kinda turned into a rant. Sorry bout that. Back to Okmulgee, if anyone has information on the town, please PM me, as I'd like to go back for a less superficial trip.

| | | The building without the roof has been like that for many years. The other one is semi active. A tree trimming company was using it for storage. Which accounts for all the tree limbs piled up inside. From what I can tell these two buildings were an oil field supply company
