Question re: posting new locations
< on 6/8/2008 10:41 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

hey guys,

I've been around a few months now, have been getting my feet wet checking out places that I've seen in the database. I'm now starting to discover my own new places, and just have a quick question.

I've noticed that some members post new found locations (pics+info) in the area specific forums rather than putting them in the database. Is it better to do this, or is it preferable to post them as a new location in the database?

Thanks!

JB

Do what you feel is right. I personally think posting info in your region is the best move. For some reason, when I post pics to the DB, there is noticable quality loss, also if you ever do decide that you don't want the pics you posted on the net any longer, it is easier to delete them off your flickr(or equivalent) than to deal with the song and dance of getting admin to take it off of the DB.

yes post locations in the photo board or regional board where everyone can see it

the DB is actually evil when you post in the DB serial arsonists will travel across two states to set fire to the location and steal the copper,

not necessarily in that order

On a side note, why can't non-full members post new locations to the database? I'm fairly new on the forums and I'm not a full member yet. I have a few locations in New Zealand that I'd like to add, but I can't.

Some locations are available for viewing by full members only. To prevent duplicate locations being created, only full members are allowed to make new locations.

To be the dissenting voice here, I think one should post in the regional boards and the DB. This way full members can get all the info about the site.

Some days that seems to be very true. We've lost a few here after they've been posted to the DB. No idea if it's coincidence though.

Here is what I would do:

-Create a DB entry
-Post 1 or 2 high quality pictures in a regional board as a "teaser" and include a link to the db.

I usually do the following:

  • Take pictures
  • Post in the LDB
  • Set fire to the location

Then, if I'm feeling cheeky, I spray paint my name on the firetrucks.

It doesn't really matter. If you like your regional forum, post it there. It still shows up on the New Topics list, which is generally where people see new threads. By putting it in a regional section, you are not limiting anyone from seeing it, but you are giving it a slightly higher visibility to people who take the time to peruse the listing of regional topics.

As for the DB, whateva. No matter what people say, there is absolutely no credible evidence that inclusion in the LDB causes any effect, and anyone who says otherwise has zero understanding of the difference between cause and effect and correlation.

The LDB picture comments are where the real pearls of joy reside, so I support anything that feeds that monster.

Oh, and don't put it in the LDB, or in a thread, or even on Flickr, if you think that you will EVER want to NOT have it on the internet. Once you post it anywhere, you have absolutely zero control over what happens to that image, so don't be a whiny little bitch about it. Make your decision to post it or not, and live with the consequences.

basic members have to post in the area specific thread and when you're a full member, its whatever you feel like doing
