| | | this has probably been asked countless times, but have you ever fallen through floors?
I had a messed up dream where I fell through the floor of an attic with a tub that had the water running. [/tmi]
I know warping and stuff is a tell tale sign of water damage, etc.. But how often have you fallen or had accidents and how do you spot weak spots? [last edit 6/4/2008 11:04 PM by yellow_wallpaper - edited 1 times]

| | | i've seen a lady come through the floor on a reno/construction site, well her legs came through... with the floor joist in the middle! i am very cautious about walking on old wooden flooring and i don't walk on it unless i have to. but sometimes you have to, so try to walk along or step onto the floor joists, you can see where they are by looking for nails/screws.
They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

| | | Well I have never actually fallen through a floor but there was an extremely close call one time when I was UEing with blackbird. We were in an old burnt out home and after exploring the main floor i decided to go upstairs, as I reached the top floor I turned left into the first room I nearly fell right back down to the main floor, I had to jump to miss the hole and scared the crap out of blackbird.

| | | Well, I can tell you how not to check for weak spots...don't gently place your foot there and then press down with ever increasing force if you are not holding on to something. When I went down I had nothing to grab on to. Luckily, only the one leg went in and only up to my knee. They say to stay close to the wall, but almost every collapse I have seen includes that area.

| | | Been a while since I posted it, and it's pretty weak compared to what could happen... Inside a derelict building above the Sawmill River in NY I was crossing a floor of only joists (no floorboards left) when a joist kinda broke. I landed across an adjacent one and caught myself before falling into the debris filled cavity below.

| | | Just pay attention where your walking. When I fell through, I had done the building a dozen times and got comfortable with it. Well, At one point my leg went through. Was kind of fun actually... But just pay attention, Step on beams.

| | | never went through a floor during a UE, but went through a floorboard on a construction site at work. I also watch a coworker fall through a ceiling.
If I fell through a floor in an old house, I wouldn't be so concerned about the fall as the potential for wood debris or other heavy items, like tubs, radiators, or furniture to follow you down afterwards if it's a major collapse.

OWWWWWWWWW. I had an accident like that. I was skiing, and I was approaching a sharp turn and was too fast and sharp - I landed in a tree, wrapping around it. I know your pain, dude. Oh, and just because you're on the first floor, don't think that you're totally safe from breaking through the floor. There is such a thing as basements. I actually worry more about falling into those...not only does concrete just feel harder to me than wood, but if you fall through the 2nd floor onto the 1st, you still have a way out(windows, doors, holes in the walls...)...however, you fall into a basement, often times the only way out is a set of stairs up to the first floor, and if the floor is rotten enough to give way, then chances are those stairs are going to do the same, and with no outside exits, how do you get out?

Well, I've seen plenty of floor collapses right up to the wall, so while it is a good rule in general, don't get too confident...what works for me is not only walking close to the walls, but finding and keeping my hands close to something to hold onto, like a windowsill...just in case...
I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam... |

Thanks for the advice and/or scary stories guys! lol

I'm not so afraid as the actual falling... its what I land on. ie, In Ghost Ship some guy is impaled when he falls.
I guess the best thing to do is just walk where the joists are and be vigilant.

| | | I'm sure someone has already mentioned this but it's good to keep in the back of your head. The floor joists are usually made of wood as well so yes they rot. trust your senses and stay close to something secure so that if in fact you do fall there will be something there to keep you mildly safe. Moral of the story be safe be cautions but enjoy what you love to do and dont worry about what might or might not happen.
