I've walked up and down the floors, and I've seen lots of Mechanical rooms, Electronic rooms, and storage rooms, most of them open. NONE of them say "Employees Only" or "Stay Out" or anything like that. Could I use this as an excuse if I'm caught, or would it sound too cocky? Just tell them you're looking around. I've caught people in the kitchen of the hotel where I work, and I just showed them out, and didn't even bother charging them for the cookies they'd stolen. I work for a pretty small hotel, though. If the hotel is staffed by a security guard, s/he might get a little more uptight, but the "just looking around" excuse should work with them as well.
