| | | More reasons to UE in Pittsburg KS < on 5/26/2008 7:06 AM >
| | | Here are some of my more recent pics from a trip to the wonderfull city of Pittsburg KS. I saw a nothing special building, but here was a great find. A throne guarding a door. This building is in the middle of a neighborhood, it seemed like an old garage or stable. Here's the inside - unfortunately the neighbors were getting nosey about me looking around. Terracotta graveyard - there's mountains of this stuff! This was on top of an old building, it didn't look used but who knows (probably a meth lab). Here's some kind of top porch in the old part of downtown, the building is really cool, sorry I don't have more pics of it - it was really cold that day.
There seems to be a building missing - this is of the old brick factory, there's a gate on this side but a hole in the fence big enough to drive a car through.

| | | Thanks for the look, the toilet look sinister! I've missed out on exploring alot of cool places due to them being too close to neighbours and such.

| | | Yay Pittsburg KS. I went to Hays last week and there is a large-ish closed grain elevator right in the middle of the industrial area. Thanks for the photos.

| | | First off I'll be in Pittsburg this week and will try to take some cool photos of stuff. Second my brother found an abandoned coal plant or something in Ft. Scott Arkansas that he wants me to check out (He was probably high though so it most likely sucks). So are we going to see anything on the grain silo in Ft. Hays? It sounds cool. Maybe I'll stop and look for it on my drive to Pittsburg.

| | | No I didn't get to mess with the silo because of work, just took a really poor cell phone pic. Look in the Kansas uedb, under Mildred, to see the remains of a cement factory & an abandoned silo. Looking forward to hearing what you find, we in KC are all about the day trips.

| | | I've posted before on what I call the Pittsburg Skyscrapper (it's the tallest building in the town). My brother and I went there yesterday to see if we could easily get in and to do a little more investigating of the place. Here's the photos I walked away with.
This is the door that was cracked open the last time I was at the site - well, it's not actually a door inside. It's the door to the back of the elevator shaft.
Here's what it looked like inside (I didn't go in because falling down an elevator shaft didn't sound like to much fun).
Here's a view of the Pittsburg Skyscrapper - notice all the open windows! There are a lot of birds that live in this building.
The front of the building. All the shops that were located on the bottom floor are now empty. Here's some pics of the shops on the bottom floor.
(I shot this through a mail slot)
The rear view of the building.
some of the odd windows of the building.

| | | Here's some photos of an old school called the Washington School - the school district now uses the building for storage. There's everything from tires to desks stacked inside this old school house.
The front of the building.
The rear of the building.
Some of the junk is stacked to the top.
The doors are locked but there are plenty of broken windows to get inside.
There's a lot of junk piled up inside this building. This is a cool old school house, unfortunately it's completely packed with crap and it's not large enough to have anything like a gym or stage. I didn't venture inside due to all the junk I could see in the windows (stacks and stacks of tires and even an old diesel engine).

| | | Here's some info on the Pittsburg "skyscraper". It's the Hotel Besse and it's 12 floors. Here's a link to a news article on what's going on with it now http://www.morning...oject-awaits-start

| | | The Besse Hotel is named after Alexander Besse. It was built in 1926 and closed in 1979. It currently is owned by Garrison Properties and is listed as a "rehabilitation tax credit project" - it currently is in their "pending" section of their website. Apparently they have some problems concerning the financing. The city of Pittsburg purchased a site next door and built a parking lot for the future 46 units. It's apparently going to be "multi-family housing", unfortunately for the city the construction was supposed to start in 2007. Still hasn't happened though due to the housing market and banking woes.
