Manotick House

A friend and I were driving through Manotick (just outside Ottawa, Ontario) when he realized that there was an old house that had been abandoned for as long as he could remember rather close to his house. After a quick stop to find an entry point (wide open back door) we headed to his place to pick up our tripods and flash units, and then found ourselves amazed by the beauty of our first proper UE trip. I returned twice after our first visit with two other friends, one of whom posed for some shots.

I had been to a few public locations around Halifax, where I had been living for the past year at University, but never an actual abandonment. I took a course in film photography during the past year at school, and discovered that it's the true passion in my life - I'm not returning to the school I was at in order to research and then attend a more photography-focused school.

Thanks in advance for any criticism and advice you can offer, I would appreciate it greatly.

If you look carefully, there's a handprint that's been ripped from the wallpaper just to the right of the dryer's control panel, and half of another left behind in some reddish-brown liquid (I think it's wood stain, definitely not blood) just to the right of the wooden slats in the shadows underneath the cabinets.

Forgot to mention - these were taken with a Nikon d80.

Nothing?

Any criticism, even if you tear them all apart is appreciated. I need to improve - and I know that when it comes to UE my shots need a lot of improvement.

Picture one is a little hard to look at. Lots going on but not enough detail to focus on one place. The graffiti is pleasantly distracting.

Picture two looks a little off kilter. If you're using a tripod, make sure it has a surface level on it. If you're not using a tripod, try bracing yourself against something. It will make it easier to hold the camera straight.

Picture three. It's a person. I'm not into people-in-UE-photos, but the photo is good for what it is. The perspective is a little weird, like you're coming from the side. But not everything in life has to be symmetrical.

Picture four. The best one out of the bunch in my opinion. A little grainy. What type of post processing did you do?

Edit --- Just saw you mention the tripod. Sorry missed it first time around.

Yeah, the first shot is really busy. I'm bothered by the left-hand side, having just that tiny edge of the wall in the shot, as well as the areas that are really burned out.

The second shot wasn't using a tripod, it was from the original trip to the site before we drove to get the tripods and flash units. I decided to leave the shot the way it is as a creative choice, as well as because straightening it in photoshop would've cropped out too much of shot.

By the time I was back at the site for the third time in a week, I was running out of things (at least at the time, I've thought of more potential shots) to take pictures of, so naturally I started to gravitate towards getting the friend who was with me into the shots.

The last shot is pretty grainy, though really only in the sky. I didn't add any false grain, I've never liked that approach. The shot was produced using two base images, one exposed for the house and the other for the sky. I multiple processed the one of the house and masked in some of the highlights and details. The graininess of the sky is from pushing the contrast and exposure of the original shot to get some tonal range. This is actually my second pass at trying to make the sky work, here's what it looked like before I really pushed it:

I appreciate the feedback, I know I have loads of room for improvement and need all the input I can get.
