| | | Generally, focus is more critical the closer you are to the object and longer the focal distance. If your lens has a marking with distance scale and an arrow, you'll notice that the closer you get to infinity, the lesser you turn. So it's like 0.3m----------0.5m--------0.7m-----1m----2m--5m--11 m--(infinity) With a 50mm (film equivalent) lens, if the distance between your lens and what you want to shoot is something between 2-5m (7 to 15') you can guesstimate and set the focus ring to your best guess(or use the digital display on your camera. It gets more painful if the digital focus control doesn't give you the object distance indicator. Another thing you can do is find/place something that has some contrast/pattern at about the same distance from the camera as what you want to photograph. Center it in your frame, auto focus on it and focus lock/switch to manual focus. Help the camera out with a flashlight if it can't focus. Pay attention to blinks/beeps indicating a successful/failed auto focus. Re-aim the camera as you see fit. Change the aperture if you don't get the depth of field you want. (too much/little depth in focus) [last edit 5/15/2008 2:09 AM by Deuterium - edited 2 times]

| | | Posted by Boyington's bastard You can't "eyeball" what you can't see. Laser light will attract an AF lock on easily at a 100 yards in perfect darkness. No bright lights.

i kinda thought that it was implied, but i'm generally not trying to focus my camera in perfect darkness...
