Might my camera have a light leak? (GE A730)

I was taking some exposures in total darkness, using my LED headlamp to paint the objects I captured. When I brought the camera home, I started to edit the pictures and noticed that two of them had purplish hazes in the upper left corner...

This one was taken with the camera tilted to the right, but if were horizontal the discoloration would be in the upper left as well.

Kinda looks like it, but try taking a long exposure with the lens cap on to see for sure.

Well this camera doesn't have a lens cap...so I'll take another picture in my basement at night.

Does the haze correspond to roughly where you were holding the flashlight?

Ah, that won't help you at all. The idea is to put the lens cap on and then take a long exposure in a brightly lit area. Then you know if light is entering the camera through something other than the optics.

How long was the exposure?! It could be amp glow... Are you running long exposure Noise Reduction? If your not, try re-exposing with long exposure NR.

Thats what I was going to say. I had that problem with my new cam. I put my noise reduction on and viola all gone.

Oh, for some reason I was thinking this was about a film camera. Is it even possible to have a light leak with digitals?

But yeah.. it's most likely amp glow.

They use a photo sensor in place of film that probably can be affected in a similar way.

Digital noise. Turn on noise reduction, try using a lower ISO setting and/or a lower ISO setting and push the exposure +2/3-1.0

RAW files work best for low light shots, so shoot in RAW format with NR on if possible. If underexposed, excessive post processing "pushing" will degrade the image and cause excessive noise. What make and model?

Well I tried it in the dark again and here were the results (lightened slightly in photoshop to show the discoloration better.

This one was taken in manual mode, serving as a control: Manual 30 second exposure, 80 ISO

This was taken in auto mode with the lens covered by my pillow: ISO 400

And this was another manual exposure, same settings as before, but this time facing a clock. For some reason, the discoloration in this photo is gray instead of purple as in the others.

What cam? Try a higher ISO. 200-800 and push the exposure +1 when you shot it.
Dark noise is normal in low light shots, you can minimize it with good shooting technique and post processing.

The camera is a General Electric A730 point and shoot. Just google image the parenthesised model number in the title of this topic to get some good pics of the camera. Thanks for the tips Boyington.

Also Micro: what is amp glow?

Try not using digital zoom as this will add more noise to the image. You can also try shooting in manual mode and play with the ISO and aperture settings. Experiment with ISO 100-1600 to see which yields the least amount of noise; 100-400 be my guess, but try 800/1600 and see if that works better.
This may help considerably.
You can also make use of light painting to add more ambient light.
The use of a post processing noise reduction app like Noise Ninja will also help. I'm not sure what available, but some freeware apps should be out there.
Since it doesn't support RAW format your stuck there.
Hope this helps.

I seem to get the least noise at a maximum of ISO 400, anything higher than that and the photo's look like they were shot on technicolor stucco.

Also I shy away from digital zoom as much as possible: the camera has 3x optical zoom, and when that isn't enough I only tap the digital zoom no more than twice...I prefer to take the pic at max res then crop down if I want to simulate getting closer.

For noise reduction: I have photoshop elements, and that does a decent job of cleaning the confetti from my shots.

Thank you for all the info. *shakes your hand*
