| | | Night time skyline shots < on 4/14/2008 3:54 AM >
| | | I did some skyline shots downtown tonight and I figured I'd post two samples and get feedback on them. Any feedback at all would be great, tell me whats good, whats bad and any tips you have for night time skyline shooting. I shot both on a Canon Rebel XT with the 18-55mm kit lens at f/10, 100 ISO. First one is a 25 second shutter, second is 15 seconds.
Thanks.

| | | I also like #2. The reflections off the building in the middle are very interesting. I would suggest that you try getting a little closer to the edge. The foreground detracts from the shots, at least for me.

I like #2 as well, and I think it could look better if you cropped out the very bottom. Great shots though!

Great to see you got a DSLR! I'd just kill the red saturation that seems evident. I used to get that with my rebel too....just balance out the color more. I really shooting higher stops for 60 seconds or more at a time.

I'm happy with it. I do kinda wish I had given the Nikon D40 more of a chance, but the Rebel XT certainly wasn't a bad choice.

Have you tried to adjust the Auto White Balance to Low Flourescent or Light bulb? this takes away the Orange glow and makes the whites stand out more.. its an interesting effect.. sometimes it will make it look too blue tho..

| | | I haven't tried that however I will experiment with it in the future. A lot of the time recently I've been staring at my camera thinking "what else can I play around with anyway?" so now I've got something.

| | | Nice technically good photos, and you got the magic hour lighting. A panorama could be done from this. The coolest thing is that Gotham City building on the far right/far left. Get closer, get in...? Do you know what corp is in there? I'm going to have Detroit dreams tonight. It's so Decolicious.

| | | Figured I'd bump this up with another recent shot I took. Same subject basically but I think it looks crisper and is positioned better. The lighting is also much more pleasing.

| | | Hooray for night photography! If I could be so bold as to offer some advice: pick a subject. The problem with skylines (and sunsets, star trails, et al) is that they look great at the time, but they don't work so well as a subject in their own right. However, they do work well as backgrounds. Try finding something of interest to serve as a foreground, even if it's just an excuse to include the nice skyline background. Hope that's useful!

Not to knock the D40, but in my opinion the rebel is a much better choice. Especially for long exposure shots, I would get so frustrated trying to shoot night panos on the d40 because the processing time took as long as the exposure. Plus there are more accessories for the rebel. As far as the shots go, my advice would be to stop down your aperture(F/22 for example) and lengthen your exposure. A higher Fstop will increase your focal plane, which would make the buildings in the back sharper.

| | | I really like the third one now that you've cropped out the ledge of the building, however I think I would have gone a little tiny bit darker. But as a whole the shot is really working well for me. [last edit 10/12/2008 9:12 PM by Carrier_X - edited 1 times]

Hey, just for the record, it sounds like the D40 had long exposure noise reduction switched on, and the rebel had it switched off. It's a standard feature on most DSLRs, and it always takes the same time as the actual exposure.

| | | Quite nice! Only major thing is the angle seems to make everything tilt to the left. Also the noise in the buildings and sky between the buildings takes away a bit. You weren't kidding about your condo, though!
