| | My first TRUE UE experience... --Minneapolis, MN < on 4/6/2008 7:28 AM >
| | | 2 Bright hand sized flashlights. 1 Leatherman multitool, attached to my belt (we did not end up using this). Dark clothes, shades of black and navy blue. and a single cell phone. My friend and I have always been into UE, but the most we ever did until now was go into storm drains and such. This time we went to an abandoned grain mill with multiple mills. First we scouted the area looking for possible entry points. We circled the entire facility and found a set of metal stairs that led up to some of the "outer workings" of the building. We went up the stairs we noticed a metal ladder that went pretty high up, my friend who has a problem with heights was not very interested and was against me checking it out. I however did not care and told him that I need to see if we can get in from the ladder. So I climbed up the ladder which must have been around 30ft or so. I got to the top and realized that the ladder connected to another ladder which scaled the entire buildings height. I climbed back down and we noticed some windows that seemed pretty easy to open. We were a bit worried about the footing around the windows, it seemed to be lots and lots of grain dust and it definitely gave a bit of way when stepped on. The windows opened relatively easily however and when we looked inside we noticed two things. 1. It was a dropdown, around 20ft. 2. There was piping and metal wall supports going across the side of the building that eventually led to a metal ladder. At this point, my friend took a look inside and said he wouldn't do it, too dangerous. I told him I would go first and asked him if he would follow me if it connected to another part of the building. We agreed and I went in. Now the wall supports were covered in grain dust which was relatively slippery and not so fun to inhale, but I didn't care very much because I was hyped up on adrenaline. I made it down without and hassle and found that it did connect to more of the building. After telling him this, he followed. The first spot we found looked to be an abandoned office of sorts, however lights were on and the door was open a crack. I peeked inside and no one was there so we opened it up. This office section had remnants that were all marked 2007, calendars, signed papers, etc. We concluded that this had not been used since last year and were ready to explore the meat of the building. At this point we started exploring the whole buildings, we went up and down stairs, climbed ladders, and explored the building to its entirety. We came across old grain machinery, janitor type supplies, and all sorts of old and interesting things. In one instance, we found a rooftop with a shack on top of it. This shack had a chair, a metal bench, and a bag of those disposable dust masks. We were a bit confused but continued on anyway. At another point we found a little closet area with a single 70's era "classy" nude picture on the wall. We had a laugh and after exploring the facility to its entirety, we headed out. Along the way out I mentioned a way that I thought would be quicker and easier to get out, but it lead to a slanted rooftop so my friend wasn't to keen on the idea. This is where we got the shit scared out of us. We made it out of the building and were heading back to where we had parked the car, on the way we noticed a single cop car impeding our path. We ducked behind the building that he was in front of and got extremely worried. Did he see us out of his mirrors? Was he here BECAUSE of us? All sorts of ideas were running through our mind. We decided the best course of action was to sit against the building and wait around five minutes or so, hopefully, the cop did not see us. After waiting awhile, we decided that we should start heading back and took a round-about way to get back to the vehicle. All was well and we made it home without a hitch! Now here are things I would have done differently. For one, we did not bring cameras (stupid I know) it did not even occur to us to grab our camera before we headed out. Because of this we have a bunch of bad quality cell phone pictures taken with flashlights as the light source. Two, I will DEFINITELY bring my ID next time, I don't know why I didn't, I guess I figured it would be better without it. This was obviously wrong and I will make sure to bring it next time. Any comments, opinions, or suggestions are welcome for our next trip. I think we may visit and old abandoned power plant!

| | | Don't worry about not taking a camera, pictures don't make you an explorer. When you go back, keep an eye out for anything that might give you away because if that cop was there for you, you need to understand how they knew you were in there, PIRs, cameras, nosey curtain twitchers watching you as you approach the mill, etc. Nice one for getting out there and doing stuff, just be aware of your mates limitations because if something goes wrong or it comes on top you have to know what your mate is capable of doing (or not, as the case may be) and what it might lead to. Take a mask next time for the dust.

| | | So what is the general consensus on Leatherman type Multi-tools. Good idea to bring one? or is it incriminating, and should be left home?
I personally think that they are used enough that it shouldn't be to much trouble, but i would like some experienced UE'rs opinion. Thanks!

| | | You seemed to do well enough without using the Leatherman this time. In the future, I'd say just go and scout around and see what you think you'll need on a site-by-site basis. I always carry my SAK Spartan with me, but for some reason, people seem to find that less conspicuous than a multitool (this is a mystery to me, but it really seems to be the case). I only use it about 50% of the time, though -- mostly for opening battery packs or cutting tape. It's more a glorified keychain than anything.

The police system of categorizing "burglary tools" has always seemed shockingly Orwellian to me. I've heard of people, in some cases SUCCESSFULLY, being charged with that crime for possessing highly innocuous things like toothbrushes, nail files, and weirdly shaped flashlights. If the cop in question has a hard-on that day he may well charge you with attempted burglary for holding a stick or a rock. Now, I don't think you should have to empty your pockets of virtually everything any half-witted local cop might think is "suspicious," but caution is always a good watchword. Just in case you do happen to be carrying a toothbrush or something similar and you get stopped by Johnny-On-The-Spot while exploring, at least the situation you describe gives you a clear moment alone in which to dispose of the "suspicious" implement. Chances are a cop's not gonna go rooting around in the dark for any weird things you might have tossed if you're just a couple of kids poking around an abandoned mill at night. Oh, I'm sick of doing Japanese things. In jail they made us be in this dumb Kabuki play about the Forty Seven Ronin, and I wanted to be Oshi, but they made me Ori! |

Yeah chances are the cop had no intention of arresting you anyways... if he did you would have been in jail. I usually carry a knife on me CT legal under 4in... and if ANYONE gives me shit for it I'm like "Hey I use it at work, opening boxes and crap; if you want I'll give you my managers phone number." And usually most people just shut up about it. I was at my buddies college and I pulled out my gerber AR3.0 in front of an RA to cut something (If I recall it was clampacked AA batteries), he looked at me funny and I was like, "It's my work knife; man I don't even go here." And the RA was like "whatever"', and walked away. So just make something up... if you can prove a legitimate excuse for you item, most people wont push it. The cop will do whatever the hell he wants to; but it's up to the judge what ultimately happens to you.
"No risk, no reward, no fun." "Go all the way or walk away" escensi omnis... |

| | | I think I may know what mill you are talking about I think one of my buddys has been through it. Its hard exploring with no camera for the fact of at any time a location can be put under higher patrol or surveillance, You can never know when you may not be able to make it back to a sight.
