Hey all I am from south carolina. I will be making a trip out to tahoe and sanfran in a couple of weeks. I was just wondering if anyone knew the status of Bodie.

Basically I have seen the pics but was wondering if it is really worth the trip. It seems almost to touristy to be any real fun. Anyone been and can you get into the buildings or is it just alot of thru the window shots you'll have to take. Thanks in advance. I have searched and havn't seen anything latley on the town.

Have fun out there.

I don't blame people for thier mistakes, but I do expect they pay for them.

I know someone who was there 2 years ago. They did say that it was touristy but enjoyed it. They were asking the guide about certain places they had seen pics of on the web but could not get to. He said that they do allow people scheduled access outside normal hours. Guess you could always call ahead and ask.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

It's touristy, but it still has that ghost town feel. There's a museum/store open in one of the buildings and a few caretaker houses, but the rest of the town is a true ghost. It's currently being preserved in "arrested decay"-meaning they are not restoring anything, but instead preventing further deterioration.

You can walk partially into a few of the buildings and look in the windows of all the buildings. The whole town is a self-guided tour.

If you're out that way, it's worth the trip. Plan on spending a good full day in Bodie and pack a good lunch. There are no restaurants there.

The big stamping mill has a guided tour.

I hate to tell you this, but he was killed by O-Dog in the last episode of season four. Sorry.

As of last week, the roadie to Bodie (god I've been waiting to use that) was socked in with snow. I couldn't get very far in my rental Ford Escape.

Last time I visited Bodie in 2003, the road was dry, but washboard for about 10 miles. It's a 20 mile dirt road with a teaser strip of asphalt for a few miles. Your Taurus should make it, unless the snow is still there. They don't plow it in winter, so snowmobiles are a popular way for winter access. Once you get there, it will be worth it. I recommend going after the snow melts because many of the artifacts are just laying on the ground and get covered by the snow so you can't enjoy them or they become a walking hazard.

Sadly couldn't make it to Bodie because of road/travel buddy conditions. Did see some nice abandonments all thru cali tho. San fran seems to be full of wierd abandonments. Happy hunting.

Just went to Bodie last Saturday. It was pretty awesome. When we got there there was a sign saying that the road was closed due to weather conditions or whatever, but we ignored it and went anyway. Got there with no troubles. We were the only people there the entire day! (except for the 2 rangers that lived there). Spent about 5 hours there shooting photos. Got some up on my Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jchilders

I'm itching to do this. How bad is the dirt road leading to Bodie? I want to take my little sports car for this road trip (2.5 hour drive for me) but if the road is really bad then I'll take the wife's Elantra. Thx~

*edit:

I called the number on the parks and rec site, and the lady told me that it's a little rough but since tour buses can handle it, I should be OK if I take it slow. I'm not driving an exotic or anything but it is rather tightly sprung, so hence the initial question. I'm going tomorrow morning--I'm stoked! Cheers~

*edit again:

I'm leaving tomorrow around 7am-ish from San Jose. I realize it's sorta last minute, but I've got room for another person if anyone's interested and they're not too far out of the way. I've got the gas covered but if you want to chip in, that'd be cool, too. It would be cool to explore Bodie with someone who knows the good stuff to look for but it's not strictly necessary. Reply or pm me if interested. Thx~

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I am thinking I want to visit Bodie again and see some stuff that I missed the first time. Is Bodie accessible in early November?

Cheers~

Sure is. Opens at 8am, year-round.

If you happen to get into the Standard Stamp Mill take some shots. Last time I was there it was closed off to public access.

Hi Railguy,

Unfortunately it looks like my early November Bodie trip will not happen due to goings on at work (which, incidentally, will mean I'll be busy almost the entire month, including the week of Thanksgiving. Meh.). I had originally planned on going while my wife is overseas since I tend to get stir-crazy when she's not here, but that's a moot point now.

However, I'd be thrilled to explore somewhere local sometime--like Drawbridge, for instance, though something more urban would be more interesting as far as UER is concerned. (I recognize ghost towning and UE are somewhat different though not mutually exclusive.) If you would like to suggest something local that a relative newbie could partake in, I'm in. Lemme know in a PM.

Cheers~
