My first post... visiting London and Germany

I have been itching to get on this forum since I first found it. Boy that 7 days you have to wait to post feels long! What a great site!

I'm kind of combining an introduction post here (which I realize belongs in another post but on most websites nobody reads those lol) with my first UE question.

I have heard about UE before and never really looked into it until something caught my eye recently again and I looked it up. Just the concept seemed interesting to me before but combined with the great photography im seeing here is REALLY getting me interested.

Anyways I am a Canadian soldier currently in Afghanistan. We are given a few weeks of leave to travel during our tour and I'm taking the opportunity to visit London and Germany! I was wondering if anyone knows any good locations in either for some UE? Maybe even if anyone on this site lives in London or anywhere between Munich and Dusseldorf and might want to take a newbie on his first UE?

I will not have much opportunity I was just hoping to find out about maybe 1 or 2 sites to visit in each place because I have to convince the wife it's worth doing after all. Because my wife will be with me any secure sites or draining would probably be a bad idea but any abandonments etc would be awesome. I know there must be LOTS of these in either country but does anyone have any specifics?

I cannot publicly post the precise dates but I will be visiting there quite soon so I would really appreciate if anyone has any suggestions.

In case you're wondering I only have a Sony Cybershot camera from probably around 5 years ago +. It takes ok pictures but does not have a tonne of fancy settings though it was $600 at the time. I am trying to read up on a bit of photography before I go so I can take control and try to make more interesting shots than those provided by the automatic point and shoot so hopefully I'll have something interesting to post when I get back.

Sorry about the wall of text I tend to get carried away.

theres plenty of active explorers in the U.K that might help

a few Germans as well

most members wont give up info like this but read the regional forums and PM some prominent members from the area you plan to visit

also thanks for serving your country and defending freedom sir.

Dunno about exploring in Munich but there is a great place(s) to eat like the Viktualienmarkt Food Hall, tons of beer gardens there too. If you get to Berlin or Hamburg you could see the flak towers.

Anyway, welcome and X said it best.....thanks.

Thanks for your input guys. I was not sure of the etiquette of being a first-time poster and pming a prominent regional member. I will give that a shot! I imagine there are lots of abandonments in these areas so hopefully I will stumble on one or two.

I can certainly understand why people would not want to jump and volunteer to give up their best UE spots. I was just hoping to get a PM from someone maybe.

keep up the good work. I am going to work hard to earn a full membership. I hope I manage to get some shots while there. I know at least one location Im visiting where pics are not supposed to be allowed so maybe I can sneak in something interesting. ;)

WW2 sites are way cool and Germany is packed with them. Many remain.

Most of Germany's WW2 solders were not Nazis, but professional career military men or hapless conscripted men serving their country.
To spit all the hostilities during the war, most Germans always had a fondness for the US, including Hitler himself.
Try to keep that in mind as many of the old timers will talk to you at length about that time if they feel comfortable with you. Take advantage of this opportunity if it interests you, as soon all from that era will be gone.

Yup, you are correct Black Sheep One!

Majority of Germans were in fact not at all in the party especially in the Whermacht. SS and Gestapo units were mostly party members though. I have talked with many Luftwaffe pilots and they were nice as could be and denounced Nazism altogether (as they should).

But back on topic, there are lots of neat bunkers to explore in Germany as Hitler was obsessed with them.

Thanks guys it's a good idea to visit with WW2 locations in mind. My wife would also probably be interested in those kind of locations. I am interested in military history, but also older historical sites like castles, churches, ruins etc.

I bet an old bunker would be interesting. I wonder if there are any grown over and not full of tourists near where I'm headed.

It'll be awesome for those Germans to talk to you... If you speak German?

for London I'd have a look here: www.28dayslater.co.uk there's lots to see.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.
