I think that Sestet has the right idea. Even state troopers and cops don't get paid enough to care. The only time I have been caught (or apprehended, at least), I was with 2 of my friends, one of which had recently been charged with multiple counts of assault and battery. They ran our names and found her record, but they still let us go, telling us the only reason she wasnt going to jail is because we were cooperative.

If you have been arrested before, then you likely know the ungodly amount of paperwork that goes with it. Put yourself in the shoes of a cop and imagine having to do all that for somebody who really isnt doing any harm. Its not worth the time, and most cops realize that.

grit your teeth in the face of fear. self repression is the true sign of a coward, toss your inhibitions to the wind.

And for any of you who actually do get approached by security and or cops, only to have the people you're with scurry and flee in a very suspicious manner; just point in their direction and yell they went that way! (Never tried it before), but if it works I'd imagine it'd be amusing. Oh and try to remember to take pictures and post so we can all have a good laugh!

Freaked out people run funny ;oP

Haha that works amazingly well on the loud, obnoxious type. They also trip over stuff a lot when fleeing (as seen in most every horror film), which makes it all the more entertaining.

I was chatting with a homeless person about a building in downtown Atlanta, when a policeman came out of the restaurant next door. He was yelling at the 'vagrant' to leave and get out of the parking lot.

He came over to tell me NEVER to give those guys any money, it'll just promote thier drug use. We then started talking about the history of the building. It does pay to be friendly and clean cut...

its funny how americans need to even make up elaborate excuses. around here if you're just like "i was just looking around" and shrug your shoulders the police will be like " oh, ok, carry on then!"

Simple...

Step 1: Show the cop some of your pics you have taken from the night:

Step 2: Take him in said location to pose with a couple morons that were also there while you were there:

Step 3: Officer leaves and you carry on with your splorin':

I usually just tell the truth.

"I think it's a cool building... and I'm trying to sharpen my photography skills."

One time an old man started throwing rocks at me through an abandoned house window. It scared me.. I walked out with my hands up and told him I was only taking pictures. He looked surprised and said, "WHY!?" I explained the house was really neat looking, the architecture was amazing and it was just a hobby of mine. He didn't believe anyone could find that house 'cool' or anything close. I explained a little more and then he was ok with it. He let me go in and take more pictures, but told me I was 'responsible for my own liability." I said ok and thank you.

I have told my daughter, also a UE enthusiast, that the camera is a passport. The mere sight of it hanging around your neck is often enough to scream innocence. The exception, of course, is companies who violate environmental laws and think you're there to get incriminating evidence against them for the press. (not going to explain that further... msgsudbury probably knows what I'm referring to)

Otherwise, I can't say how many times I've been in active areas, walked past curious workers, engaged in idle chit-chat, snapped some pics and moved on without issue.

The presence of the camera, and a slight air of "assumed authority" most often gets you through.

With cops, I find the camera, my age, my appearance, lack of weapons, lack of tools, lack of spray paint, and lack of Batman utility belt, and perhaps a shade of social engineering gets me out the door unscathed.

Yeah man, I have never met a cooler cop, he ASKED to go see the tunnel, and then after he got half way in he said "I better get the fuck out of here, my radio won't work in here and if dispatch can't get a hold of me they we send reinforcements because they will think I am in trouble"

Stand up guy, big time, I wish all the cops, especially young ones in my area were as cool as this guy

I've found myself using the dog leash excuse quite a few times.

I'm guilty! It's worked every time thus far. I've even gone to the extent of using my dog's old collar with his name, rabies vaccination, and home address.

I'm a professional photographer rounding off my architectural photography portfolio.

This actually works. I carry a small album with me, and they just go through it and go, ahhh, people really do photograph decrepit things.

I've never actually been caught, but I think I would probably end up arrested with the way I look. also, I have a silly point and shit--er, shoot, camera, so
I can't play off the photographer thing that well. But, the cops around here don't care that much, hell, I got 4 cops on me for walking down the streets of Delridge at 4 AM with a walking stick, and the cop asked me what the stick was for, I told him I have an intermittent leg problem (which I do...), and he let me off the hook. He also said that they only bothered me because I looked suspicious and they were bored. As I was walking away, the SPD helicopter came over the horizon towards me. I laughed, and so did the cop.

I've met up with security more then once on public property at a certain steel plant in the hammer. They have always asked me two things :

"Are you with the newspaper"

"Are you with greenpeace"

I make sure NOT to wear my greenpeace hat now when UE'ing.

Also that cop is hot. I keep meeting chief wiggam types while street shooting. WTF is that about?
