Once in a while some us might get caught and that is a given. But has anyone here ever been caught and used a exscuse to get out of trouble. For instance I was exploring a abandoned historical house last week , when the security gaurd came and asked me what I was doing I told him " hello sir , im just a local student interested in the history of this area and I wanted to get some pictures for reference before the vandals get to the place and trashed it." he said he was fine with it as long as I didnt go inside and I stood by my word and kept outside. Anyone else use this tactic to get out of a sticky situation?

When it's in the country, I used to carry around a leash and act like my dog ran away. However, that means playing along, calling your "dog" and actually walking around for as long as you know the people who caught you are watching, which sometimes can really be a pain in the ASS....especially if they are really curious and want to help, or when they ask you to describe the dog.

I've gotten the same question after I'd already been in places. Folks are usually pretty cool, but I'm older and don't look like I'll be breaking things for no purpose. Sorry, young folks.

this is true.

one thing I've seen from photos on here is people dressed in all black, even the shoes and ski mask.

to me that looks more like a burglar than a photographer.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

unfortunately your right... I've explored with people who wore all black and ski masks, but walking to the site ALWAYS look out of place... 4 guys walking down the street half in all black.... The BIGGEST thing is DON'T RUN! We were going to a site the other night, and a car rolled up, I stood in the middle of the road (we were legal) but three of the group still ran. Actually probably would have got us in trouble, but as it turned out it was the other cars of explorers coming out to meet us.....

Naw but in all seriousness it helps if you KNOW the law! I got busted on the other side of a fence, with my car... The officer asked what I was was doing told him taking photos, he asked if I knew this was federal land (the navy currently owns it) I told him yes, then asked him if he knew that he didn't have any no trespassing signs... He laughed at let me go... Moral of the story, tell the truth, use logic, carry copies of photos you've taken to SHOW what you do....

I saw half stay and half go....so I ran too LOL....but yeah from now on I won't. I wasn't sure what the protocol was as far as where we were...normally at a regular site, I wouldn't run. Should have asked that ahead of time.

Thats fine for all yu guys who are into photography...
The group i am with, we just go out to see, and dont take pictures.
So excuses are pretty fun.
Even if we get the people who refuse to speek english and shout "poolice! i call them now." well, by tend to get them, i mean once..
Normally we stay stealthy, have a good time.. Granted we may not get into the same places as some of yu guys with Cams do sometimes, but to me its TONS more fun.
Are excuse is normally "Im sorry, i didnt think we were doing anything wrong, we were playing hackysack and it went over the fence....sorry.." or something simliar with some type of prop.

I'm confused. You're talking about yourself here, right?

I've been arrested and the only thing that got me off the hook was telling the truth. My companion and I were mistaken as copper thieves. Having the camera and tripod helped convince them I wasn't. My only other possessions were a flashlight and a clip knife. I was wearing normal clothes.

It was not a happy time and I was arrested at rifle point. Had to get face down on the ground; the whole 9 yards.

When you trespass without the intention of breaking any other laws, it is a misdemeanor. When you trespass and break another law, it is a felony and the guns come out. (At least that's how it goes in Texas)

If you go out looking like a 1950's cat burglar, they're probably going to stick it to you.

Then again, if you go out with a backpack full of stuff looking haggard, they may think you're a bum and give you a vagrancy citation.

Tell the truth. You can slant the truth, but keep it essentially true. NEVER say that you are an Urban Explorer. In fact, avoid the words Urban and Explorer at all costs.

... ive been in just such a situation.

security_guard: "oh, i thought that you were one of those 'Urban Explorer' guys."

neX: "no sir. was just hiking up one of the trails towards the ${big_trail_system}, saw the group of broken down houses, decided to check it out. so, whats the story here?"

[[ 20-30 minute casual conversation ensues about the history of the place ]]

i did hike in. i hiked out too.

I agree with what many people said about staying cool, being friendly, and not acting or looking like your up to no good! (Only the Amish don't appear suspect when all in black!)

I have had the best luck just playing it cool or friendly. I've 'wandered' onto training grounds for prison guards, only to have security pull up to me in their patrol car. I just pretended not to pay any attention until they slowed down to have a closer look. Then I turned arround pretended to just notice them looking at me, put a big smile on my face waved and said "Hello!". (holding my camera in front of me). They immediately lost interest and pulled the car up next to the person I was exploring with who was at the other end of the building looking suspicious and guilty. They actually got yelled at and told to leave, 'or else'. . . kinda thing.

And for any of you who actually do get approached by security and or cops, only to have the people you're with scurry and flee in a very suspicious manner; just point in their direction and yell they went that way! (Never tried it before), but if it works I'd imagine it'd be amusing. Oh and try to remember to take pictures and post so we can all have a good laugh!

Freaked out people run funny ;oP

I've found it doesnt matter what you look like as long as you can make it obvious that you have no intention of performing acts of vandalism or theft.

One tip (though somewhat ridiculous, and only for those who shoot digital... which is most of us) is when doing a high profile site, use two cards for your camera and only have interior pics on one. Take that one out when you are done shooting the inside. If you get caught they will want to see whats on your camera, and this way there is nothing incriminating. Make up some lie about how you just want to take some snapshots and didnt know you were trespassing. I've used this and they just ran a background check and told me to screw.

unless on "labeled" prison campus, they have a warrant or if you are actually placed under arrest you don't have to show them a thing.

As long as you sound confident, and vaguely pretentious I find it's pretty easy to talk your way out of things. However it also helps if you don't look like a hoodlum. Clean-cut is the way to go when you're up to anything not quite legal, it makes you seem trustworthy and harmless.

absolutely. the more you blabber on about ridiculous academic nonsense they eventually lose interest and realize that nerds arent gonna hurt anything.

What a lot of people don't tend to realize is that security guards usually don't get paid nearly enough to go through the whole process of detaining you, calling the police, calling the owner, and filling out some paperwork just because they caught you snooping around someplace. If you look fairly innocuous (i.e., no weapons or burglar's tools), they're usually inclined to just tell you to go away. The level of rudeness is truly what varies; some people will be really nice about it, some people will threaten to call the police if you don't leave this instant. At HRPC I've ran into the security guards a few times; it always works to just tell the truth. And the truth for me is that I'm fascinated by the history of the facility and would just like to take a few pictures. They still tell me to leave, but they're almost always very nice about it, and certainly don't pick up a phone to call the police or threaten me with legal action.

Oh, I'm sick of doing Japanese things. In jail they made us be in this dumb Kabuki play about the Forty Seven Ronin, and I wanted to be Oshi, but they made me Ori!

Was it federal land? If it was a statie or local cop can't do jack. Arrests on federal land need a federal officer; US Marshall (formerly Sheriffs), DEP, CIA, FBI, etc etc... Or at least that's how it used to be. My dad used to party on army core of engineers land; and when the local cops used to try and stop him and his buddies would tell him they can't do crap unless they had the feds with them. When the cops radioed back to check that... they confirmed that indeed they had no authority on federal lands ... and had to leave my dad and his friends alone ... seeing as the nearest DEP officer was like 3 hours away.

or thats how it used to be... post 9/11 i don't know
