| | | Good ol' D70! Long may it live in our hearts. There are a couple of nasty dust spots on your sensor, I think - might want to give it a clean...

NASTY Dusk spots.... I cleaned my D70 myself (I'm hardcore like that), but I wouldn't recommend that... I screwed up and didn't get a ribbon cable in there right, then it didn't work till I took it apart again... How do you like the lens? What's the f/? Is that a VR Lens? DX?

Yes, the dust spots are quite nasty. Where should I clean it? I clean the lens every time I put it on... And the stats on the lens: It is a Nikon DX Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII ED (Thats what it says) It was a factory demo that was re-built and covers a warranty. I picked her up on Ebay for about $100

| | | Cool deal on the lens. I spent a lot of time researching that lens, but decided to go with a waaaay more expensive lens. Also I think that may be the older lens, I seem to remember that they now make that lens VR.... More than likely those dust spots either on the internal UV filter (hot shoe) or on the actual CCD. If you haven't already tried locking up the mirror and blowing out dust you can try to do that, if not then the camera needs to be taken apart and the filter removed, cleaned and put back together. I'd take it to your local camera repair shop if you don't have a warranty... If you do, it may be covered...

| | | the dust spots come from dust being on the sensor, not the lens. just clean the sensor yourself, blow it out with compressed air or a rocket duster. i do it almost every week and never have problems.

This is the sensor, right?
I'm still getting the hang of the whole photography thing, which brings me to another question: I'm interested in photography, but don't really have time for classes. Any good books out there aimed at Digital SLR photography for dumbasses?

| | | When you lock up the mirror (as you do in the D70) and blow out the dust, you don't clean the sensor, but instead a piece of glass that covers it. If you keep blowing out the camera and still have the dust, send it in to get cleaned, as it is possible to get dust between the glass and the sensor.

| | | Watch for compressed air I would not just grab your computer duster and start spraying all willy-nilly most of those have some nasty lubricants and the like added to them. I would also stay away from the CO2 cartridge powered blowers as well considering they are usually imported products charged on the same equipment that fabs CO2 cartridges for paint ball and pellet guns that add all sorts of wonderful corrosives and oil to the product. Get yourself a good quality blower brush and keep it clean (zip locked) when you are not using it. I had a similar problem with my D40 a little patients and a blower brush solved the problem toot sweet.
