would it be at all worth it to check out an empty wing of a mall?

From this sandy edge
The rolling sea breaks my revenge
With each whisper a thousand waves, I hear a roar... I'm coming home

Sure, if you're interested in malls. Otherwise, why bother?

I have seen some great shots of abandoned malls. If it's just an empty wing of an active mall though, it might not have as much potential, but checking it out could never hurt.

But seriously, it might not make for much high-art photography, but it exactly epitomizes some of the things that I really dig: places built and designed with very specific function and purpose, just left empty and devoid of meaning. I like to masturbate in those places.

Mandias I always thought that was really unique thing you did. Instead of tagging a place, you just did your thing and left a few samples of your DNA. Not only does this prevent from ugly tagging or vandalism, but it lets visitors know; "Hey Mandias has been here!" I always love coming across those white puddles in an abandonment.

As for the abandoned wing, is it still open to the public and just no retail in that section of the mall or what? While it may not be "artistic" it could definitely be cool to get photographs of and if you want to make them artistic just make them black and whites and host them on myspace.

Go for it. exploration isn't only about photography

Surrounded by empty mines and trains that just don't run.

There is a mall that I go to frequently that is partially abandoned. See, I've had a PO Box at that location since 1986, and while mail is SUPPOSED to be forwarded to my new box, I tend to check the old one at least once per week, just in case....
The mall is slated to be closed at Summer's end, and by the looks of it, most of it is already shut down. There are whole stretches of dusty, vacant store fronts. In all honesty, there doesn't seem to be anything worth exploring therein as most of the former stores have been stripped bare, and in any case, anyone walking by can see the entire contents of the store (all 15' x 20', give or take....) through the chain link style gate across the entrance.
At one time, this mall meant something to us 'metalheads' of the early - mid 1980's (You should have SEEN me back then in my blue jean jacket and fake leather pants! I was cool, honest I was! ;)), but these days, its dead and gone.
I don't know if that relates well to your own situation, but its my 2 cents for the day........

I'd love to check out the second floor of a certain former department store in a certain mall...

We have a strip mall in Plattsburgh ready to be torn down, and it does seem like a tempting place.

Not really. Imagine a closed mall. You are walking out, everyones locked up.

Malls are boring. If the mall is really empty and everyone's left, what's left? Display cases, if you are lucky. All there is is a little store, and then an exit out the back. Boring.

But go for what you want to go for - if you are even wondering if it's worth it, then it sounds like you want to go?

Also, remember that depending on the site, malls are pretty much going to be a monitored site. At least that's how it was in Michigan. I have no idea the security in your area. We had abandoned malls that would have been impossible to get into. One was gone for seven years or so and they STILL had security. The value of the mall was just too high for them to deal with scrappers or taggers.

I know it's stupid, but I still occasionally enjoy just walking through authorized personnel/employee only doors in malls and touring around in the back passages. I remember the first time I did it and how liberating it felt to realize that, as Ninj said, you can authorize yourself.

And besides, sometimes it provides really convenient parking access.
